What would people recommend? I like to think I'll be buying the perfect bike for me. I don't know if it makes any difference, but I'm quite a big guy - 6'4. I want a nice solid full suss mountain bike that I can really ride hard over dirt tracks and hills and so on. I've been looking at the Saracen Raw 2 and I really like the look of that bike. What do people think? Would this be a good bike for me?

If anyone has any recommendations in mind, remember I'll probably have a budget of about œ400/500 by the time I come to think about buying.

  • For that budget, if you want something solid buy a hardtail.

    What he said.

œ500 (new ones anyway) full sussers aren't great.

œ800 is where I'd start looking at the double bounce. Kikapu or Teocali.

  • Yea I'd second, third and forth whats been said above. Unless you really really need a full susser you'll be carrying around alot more weight then you need to as well. There's a few great XC hard tails out there for under œ500

I seriously recommend NOT buying a Saracen.
I have very few good experiences of them (to be precise, NO good experiences).

Thanks for the pointers, guys. I'll take them all into consideration. Robb-o's opinion of Saracen surprised me - my sister has a Team Saracen XJ70 and it's a great bike. Mind you, it is a BMX. I've got no experience with Saracen's mtb range.

My Saracen is roughly the same as the one you were looking at. If you get it you will have compromised yourself:
You will be carrying extra weight.
The components won't be as good as a similary priced hardtail.
You may find yourself spending more money than you have on repairing the damn thing as i have found out [B)]

The top end Saracens are good bikes. But they are out of your price range. Look at: Kona, Specialized, Giant, and GT to name a few. There hardtail bikes are well spec'ed for the price.
