I want to go to Cannock Chase, and am trying to work out how to get there by train. Am i correct in thinking that i can go from Oxford, to Birmingham New Street, and then on to Cannock Station from there? Also, once i am at Cannock, is it far to ride to the trails? And can someone show me a map of how to get from the station to the trails? Thanks a lot.

You don't want to go to Cannock station, it's miles away. Go to Rugeley or Hednesford stations. I'll draw a route of how to get from Hednesford station to Birches valley on Google maps in a bit if I can be bothered.

Thanks a lot. Not having a car sucks.

EDIT: I just realised the journey takes 3 hours - is there anywhere cheap and close to stay overnight? Either that or i get back very late.

Do you have to reserve bike space on trains?

I never do when going to bristol, but then that takes 12mins.

    not working :(

Sometimes it overheats. You have to make sure it's in a ventilated place all the time.

Depends on the train company. Most local ones, no. Virgin ones, yes.

hmm, I'd need to get a virgin one if I went to cannock.

Why only virgin? They have rather large trains don't they?

    not working :(

If its Virgin trains then yes, others nope.

You would go from New street to Rugely.Cannock DH isnt far from rugely stations, but they're sort of hidden.
Follow the dog hard xc route is quite a way, but its as close as you will get by train.

You could do with someone who's been before showing you for your first time.

You have no links from myspace or w/e who could meet you at new street?

you could put your bike in a bike bag, that you could take in with you (done it before loads) and i'd recomend you book tickets online because its MUCH cheaper.

If you get off at hednesford, the follow the dog route is only bout 5-10mins away and if you want to stay overnight, theers some motels nearby or in hednesford I think. I know there is the Uxbridge motel, but i don't know if it's any good for money or quality etc.
