Hard drive issues.

Have 3 hard drives in my comp, System disk, one for storing music and vids and one for video editing, All SATA,

Sometimes my computer will freeze and need to be restarted, Mouse dissapears and keyboard shortcuts do nothing, If I press reset and read all the crap as it starts up it only detects 2 harddrives and not the system disk, Then Il switch it off for a few mins and it will detect all 3 and start up fine.

All cables are tight and theres 4 120mm fans going flat out so dont think its heat affecting it, Any Ideas?

havent fallen off,
im just having a rest

That sort of thing has happened to me in the past, just before the HD failed completly. How old is the drive?

Its 18 months ish, And thats not good if its dying, its a Maxtor and apparently they should last a fair while, Would be a pain to replace it or reinstall as Adobe Premiere doesnt like its files being moved about and half my vid project would be lost [:(]

yer...Im sure its not dying, but that was happening to mine before it died. coincidence? I would probably have a backup of any super important things just in case

good comeback! You could also try de-fragmenting the drive. Its helped me with a couple of problems I've had in the past

Maxtor really aren't that great. They're not overly bad, though.

What PSU have you got? What voltages is it giving out? You can check in the BIOS for them at system idle, which is a fair point to start, but you need an idea of them at system load, too. No idea what tools exist to do that under Windows.

I assume you've tried different cables?

Ive tried the cables, Didnt make any difference, Its fine when its been off for a few mins anyway, And it happens maybe once a month but its always when im busy and at an annoying time,

Couldnt find much in bios apart from stuff with the CPU which said it was all ok.

Its a HyperR 580 so it should be ok with running all the stuff in the comp,

Is the HiperR 580 modular? if so double check the connections, also how have you partitioned the devices across the 12v rails? You should try and keep the load even. I'd look into getting Western digital drives, i'm now running or have built computers for people running a total of 11 WD hard drives, only one has failed and that was fried by a dodgy caddie as soon as i turned it on. Are you using a controller card? Are all the SATA ports using the same protocols?

Didn't want to make a new thread for Harddrive Issuses so ill post it in here.

Everytime my windows starts up, it decides it needs to check my Documents Partition for consistency.
I Shutdown properly everytime "Start > Shutdown" etc.

    Any ideas?

Yeh its the modular, It has 3 12v cables so have used one for lower harddrive and fan, one for upper hard drives, floppy and front fan, and one for the CD/DVD drives and rear and top fans, Its in an Antec p180 and its a pain to sort the cables out or I could probably get it a bit more even.

Not running SLI so it hasnt used the other cables. Tho it has used the extra cable that powers the processor I think?

The sata goes straight into the motherboard not a controller card, I havnt set anything up, Just installed windows onto the system disk, then added the other 2 and formated them and they just worked.

Could you post a complete pc spec? if your running a high power pc 580W may not be enough. although usually the pc will switch itself off. may be intermittant reading from the drive.

Try unplugging the fan, and the music hard disk if you dont use it often, plus any other unnessisary stuff. ie bottom cd drive if you have two, any fancy lights, card readers.

If that fails. i'd be looking at a new hard drive, overclockers have 500gb seagate drives for under œ80 now. well worth looking at!

try downloading hdd life- it monitors both the temp, and the expected life of your hard drive.

    http://www.hddlife.com/eng/download-freeware.html

let us know what the temps and reliability come back at....
(best to do the temps under high load...)

It must be a maxtor SATA thing as mine is showing 79%, although it has nearly double the usage(8327 hours).
My main windows hard drive is a western digital sata, and weirdly, has nearly the same work loading as yours:

    Health status 95%
    Performance 100%
    Temp 27 degrees C
    Work time: 6 months 6days 15 hours (4479 hours).

So the only thing i could suggest is swapping both the power cables and sata cables over from another drive just so you know its not the cables themselves, and/or maybe disconnecting one or both of the spare hard drives for a few hours to check its not an overloaded psu.

Like I said it only happens say once a month, So I could be without music or being able to use the editing drive for days and it may not even happen, Was just trying to solve the mystery of why it did it.
