Work experience clothing (tie or no tie?)

k, I got work experience all next week at a maritime engineering company. ( 9 - 5.30 [:0] gutted!)

The dress-code on the form I was given says: "Smart, no jeans or trainers"

Do I take this to mean shirt and tie with smart trousers or should I forget the tie?

Taking into account that it's a marine engineering place, how smart will the employees be dressed? I don't want to be too over-dressed if I have to do some hands-on stuff.

Can anyone give me any idea of what the actual dress code at these sort of places is??

cheers [;)]

Go with tie first day, if the other workers arn't wearing ties take it off and stuff it in your pocket.

Exactly. If a dress code says smart, then it's best to play it safe and take a tie. You can always take it off later.

I better not be doing mechanics and stuff. It's the design side of it I'm more interested in.

There's nothing worse than trying to work on something badly designed because the designer has absolutely no hands on experience, thus making something very hard to work o when it could have been so much easier.

Dave, just out of interest, what do you actually do?

From the bits and pieces I know, I'm getting the impression you're some kind of engineer in the RAF, but that's a bit of a guess...

Don't do tie-in-the-pocket. Do tie-around-the-neck. If you get to take it off later, that's cool, but wearing it when you get there will form the best possible impression.

could be worse. you could be driving,

9-5:30 (or 8:15-4:30 in my case) plus an hours drive each way is really quite draining.

jeans are scruffy, but more to the point, when they get caught in a machine, they pull you in. when trousers get caught, they rip easier.
