Hi all new to the forum returned to the MTB scene recently so not to knowledgeable about the current products on the market.
I have a Santa Cruz Chameleon (blue) with the following:
XT front & rear mech
Sach wavey shifters
Magura rim brake setup
Azonic downhill bars
specilaized cold forged stem
RST XL folks
a specialized stout hub laced to Mavic D521 rim (front)
a LX hub laced to a Mavic ceramic 121 rim (rear)
USE seatpost
Selle Italia C2 saddle
FSA Orbit 2 XL headset
XT Hollow tech crank botttom bracket combo
DMR V12s
oh & lots of green bolts
Anyway i m in need of a new rear wheel wondered if you guys could pass on some advice about what to buy & where to buy. Although one day i want to be running DISC brakes, for the time being i will stick with what i have & will require a DISC compatible hub. Most of the riding i now do is cross country so i m looking for a strong / lightweight rim / hub setup. Budget is around œ100 depending what i can get for that.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Matt

For what you want the bike for Shimano Deore hubs will last a lifetime of miles!

EX717 on Pro 2.
Scrap that. Can't afford that.
If you can, Hope hub on a Mavic rim.
Getting a Hope XC won't be too much over your budget.
Also, try on ebay.

I disagree. I have killed several deores just from riding through a lot of mud. And I do not blast the hubs with jet water either (before you ask). They are simply not a sturdy enough hub for proper biking (i.e. xc with reasonable descents/small jumps etc)
For œ108 you could get a nice Hope XC with a 717 rim at Merlin. Great whee;l and should last a lifetime.Crushing the symptoms0 -
Hows does a 721 rim sound ? I may well look into the hope hub.
Thanks

721 is slightly sturdier than the 717. A wee bit heavier but stronger/wider so it's worth gettingCrushing the symptoms0

To be honest i was gonna go for a silver rim to match my front rim, thanks for the offer though any further advice would be great.

EX-721 is pretty much the same as the D-521 on your front wheel appart from stickers and colour. If you don't find it too heavy go for it. Get a decent hub(not deore) and spokes(dt-swiss revolutions if you can afford them).
Most important: make sure the person who's going to assemble the wheel knows what he's doing and will re-tension the spokes for free after they've bedded in.
P.S.- Make sure you don't use ceramic specific pads with a standard rim or it will wear the braking surface really fast. I'm saying this 'cause you now have a ceramic rear rim.0 -
cheers ocha nice bit of advice there. My front seems reasonable weight so i m gonna see whats about. How long os the bedding in period mileage wise ?Show me your green bits i might buy them !0

How much do you weigh, i'd look at the xm719 with dt revolutions on the best hubs you can afford, probably deore xt. They are better than proII but need a lot more tlc, you need to keep them well adjusted cone-wise and nicely lubed. If you want something a bit less maintenance then pro II will be your cheapest option.

40 miles or so, I guess... Just grab a few spokes with your hand and see if you can notice significant differences in tensioning. It's normal to get a couple of spokes or more quite loose in the first rides. This shouldn't happen after re-tensioning for quite a while, unless you ride really hard.0

Anyone recommend the Mavic crossland wheelset ?Show me your green bits i might buy them !0

They're relatively light AM XC wheels. Price is ok for the weight/toughness ratio. They'll take more punishment than most of the wheels of the same weight, but I wouldn't go too hardcore on them. Good hubs and spokes on a EX-721 will give you a tougher wheel(handles jumping and DH with ease) with a little more weight(noticeable if you're into XC). Using EX-719 instead of 721 might be the best compromise-both weight and resistance wise they are between the two sets.0

right guys i m having trouble deciding on a wheel, can you recomment anything else other than above. SUN ? Halo ? Azonic ?
Thanks

Hope pro 2 hubs are just over your budget but are worth looking at. Halo rims are more for freeride/dh/dj so a bit heavy for what your doing. I havent had any experience with sun XC rims or azonic so can't help you there. The ringle hub also has a loud freewheel, so it sounds pimp-as when you ride along.

Id go 721 to match the front. Hub wise i dont get all the hype on hope hubs, even people on tight budgets are always urged to lash out on pro 2's- yes theyre good, but not always necessary cost wise. I have always had lx or deore and ive lubed occasionally and they have been fine.

Found myself a good deal.
Pair of XT Disc hubs on D521 rims with tioga factory 2.3 tyres & some special tubes œ75 seems good to me a saving of œ50 ish assuming all is true ;-)Show me your green bits i might buy them !0
