Strange noise from front wheel

Whilst riding yesterday I noticed a high pitched whine from the front wheel - it only seems to be noticeable at high speeds - could it be the brake pads rubbing? Or a hub issue? I just had some work done at the LBS where he had to remove the wheel but didnt touch the brakes? It's driving me potty![V]

is it surface dependant? could it be the tyres buzzing on the surface?

Well I just fitted some new Fire XC's, so I thought it could be. Doesnt seem to be, but what I forgot to add earlier is that even when I am slowly pushing the bike it makes a sound. When I am riding 'normal pace' its OK, but then when I speed up it kicks off again - I checked the brake pads when stationary and the alignment looks good.... strange!

Okay, do you get it when the front wheel is off the ground at high speed?
Also have you taken the wheel out and put it back in to see if it'll just go away?
I'd also take the wheels out and check the cones (sorry cannot see what hubs you have.)

Running Hope XCs at the moment - I fitted new skewers - the wheel is in snug and is running true - totally miffed - it's like a 'squeeky gate' sound but slightly more high-pitched! You can hear me coming round a berm a mile away!

Are the skewers greased, are they done up really tight. Have you greased the cam?

Greasing squewers has nothing to with the wheel squeeling. Are the hub bearings ok, if they are not greased they could be causing the noise.

Everything is fine re: skewers, have just been checking it out again, it's defo coming from the brake, not the hub/slewers - Im thinking the rear of the brake pad is rubbing - shall investigate further!!

I had a squeak on mine at the start of one ride, had never heard it before and it was getting on my nerves, so stopped and checked it out, couldn't work it out, so started riding again, it was still there, stopped again and spun the wheel, no sound. So when I started riding and it started again I just kept lifting the front of the bike and letting it drop back down, it fixed it so I have no idea what it was, its never done it again so I assume it just knocked something into place....I hope.
It could be the brake pad rubbing, I think its copper slip that you can put on the back of the pads, on the edges to stop squealing. Just make sure it doesn't get on disc or actual braking surface of pad.
