Hi, just found this forum and looks good[:)]
I am looking to upgrade the bars on my 07 Scott Reflex 50 and am drawn towards Raceface flat carbon ones, the bars on my bike are 20mm rise. Are there any pros or cons for going flat from a small rise?
Thanks, Steve

i'd go with a riser bar not flat. iff you want carbon look at the easton monkeylight bars. easton are probally the best and most known for making quality carbon and normal bars.

If you go for flat bars your weight will be brought down and forward, so climbing will be easier, but you'll lose traction more and find it more difficult to pick up the front end for going over obstacles. It is really down to personal preference though, if you are on good terms with your lbs then they may let you try a cheapo flat bar to see if you get on with one, then buy a more expensive one if it agrees with you.

Easton do make good bars, Salsa also make a very wide flat bar, because the problem you will have is that the flat bars are often very narrow for xc snake types.

Thanks for the repies, i am only 11st so i don't think my body weight should be too much of a problem.
The Raceface bars in question (only œ34 on ebay) are only 20mm narrower than my present ones, which are only 20mm rise which seems a very small amount to upset my riding position, would a stem with higher rise be the solution?

Well if you work out what new stem you'll need then it will keep your riding position similar, but equally you might like the slightly more heads down xc position. I would be wary of buying a second hand carbon bar because you have no idea of the history, whether they have stacked it into a wall, over torqued the bar clamps etc. For cheap carbon on ebay look at ericli and MRBikestore for really cheap stuff from HK, both are okay and have been used before without incident. personally i'd prefer the piece of mind.
