Folks,
my chain was near snapping and i changed it along with the sprockets. However, for some reason the two don't seem to mesh together and the chain is jumping and skipping on top of the sprocket teeth.
I fitted another new chain to try and it is behaving in the same manner. The cable is also new.
Anyone have a clue as to what is happening?
Regards.

when you say sprockets, do you mean the rear cassette?
and did you get the correct chain for the amount of gears, i.e 9 speed cassettes need a 9 speed chain.
What it could be is a problem with the mech not being aligned properly, allowing the chain to wander slightly, like ghost shifting.
other than that, i'm goosed.

I do mean rear cassette and it's 7 speed.
Rear mech is a properly alligned new M761.
What's ghost shifting?0 -

Sometimes it overheats. You have to make sure it's in a ventilated place all the time.

First one was some sort of generic chain and the seconmd is a KMC Z51.0

So you put on a new seven speed chain, and cassette. Is it definately slipping at the back, and is the chain definately slipping on the cassette? Could it be the freehub not engaging and allowing the cassette to move in the wrong direction? Also how are the front rings, are they very worn, if so replace them. TBH you don't sound overly confident it might be an idea to take it into a local bike shop.
Also M761 is what, deore xt rapidrise, isn't that a nine speed mech, if so might it be that the chain is getting jammed in your rear d‚railleur?

Maybe you have bent the teeth somehow, that could cause it to skip,
But if its doing it on all of the gears, its probably not that
