No, more to do with the fact that you pretty much repeated what I'd said, but in a way that made it seem like you were revealing the ultimate truth to me.

To Nirveos, Ok then, i won't repeat what you said. You aren't gaining mass because you are probably using all your calories on cardio. Cardio uses the aerobic respiration system. Which breaks down carbohydrates in the form of glucose to create 38 ATP per glucose. REgardless of your calorific intake if you are doing alot of cardio all these calories will be burnt. Exercise of over 30 minutes though will use your lipid stores which can produce up to 198 ATP per molecule. Maybe you are doing too much cardio and using too many calories and so the body can't use them to build muscle. How often are you doing cardio? You want to be looking at three times a week MAX at your age. And waht are you doing? Is it the same stuff? It seems odd but your muscles actually get 'bored' of the same exercise and eventually they don't get bigger. You could use a traning method called Fartlek training. Google it or i can explain it on here if you want. Also try some sprinting up hills and down hills, or even piggy back races with a few friends you could train with. This will start to build muscle in the legs which in turn will help build muscle elsewhere, as leg exercises release the most testoseterone. Also look into plyometrics, again google or i can explain. Hope that helps

sit ups, bench press, and chest expanders (much quicker than weights and they are fun to) :) save the extorsionate amount of money gyms charge

Yeh, I said, I'm not doing cardio on purpose, I have no specific exercise regime, that doesn't mean to say I don't exercise.
Yes I know what Fartlek is, I did pretty intensive athletics training for 4 years, to no particular avail, apart from a pretty high level of fitness.

Argh, I cannot gain weight myself, it's really annoying.
Being 15, I'm not gonna start doing weights, but I hear that the more important thing is actually the diet. However I don't really have that much control over my diet (mum makes the dinners) so I can't seem to.

However I don't know why I am so skinny. I know different people have different builds, but I eat quite well, quite a lot of protein, carbs, and I exercise regularly, mainly cardio (not specifically, it just happens to mainly be what is affected by what I do). Still I think I should have more muscle on me than I do, or at least a bit more meat.

I started weights at 15 and it did no harm, but I never tried to go big with them. I did high reps/low weight until I was a bit older. It increased my strength markedly, and gave me some muscle tone but not that much mass.

When it comes to diet and your mum making your meals, I don't know what you currently eat, but the changes you need to make could be relatively small and involve minimal alteration of your meals. Alternatively, protein and/or carb shakes can be used to beef up your diet. To put on serious mass you need to be eating more than 3 times a day anyway, so that's a good bet. Finally, you could volunteer to take over cooking duties, an idea that will almost certainly go down well [:D]

The trouble with cardio exercise is that it lowers testosterone levels. Seeing as testosterone is one of the most powerful muslce growth hormones, serious cardio and large muscles are enemies.

Seriously though, don't worry if you're not stacked at 15. You're not meant to be.

I'm 27, 5'11" and 10 stones.
I actually went to the docs the other day and while I was there, I asked him to give me a general health check.
Apparently, i'm right on the button.

anyway...

at 15, I was about 8 1/2 stones so don't worry about it.

One thing I did try recently, was eating a breakfast, big dinner, big tea and something carb laden for supper and not snacking in between, as opposed to snacking all day. I put on a bit of weight, but I couldn't be bothered with eating all that food in one go.

so, maybe give that a try for a month and see if you can slow your metabolism down.
Don't eat less, just eat 4 times a day and eat more when you do eat.
Seemed to work for me. (I got up to 10 and a half stones)

• Guys you really should stop stressing about how much you weigh! I am only 5'2 and 7 stone approx but I can curl with 10/12kg and lift 6kg for my lats, use 12kg for shoulder press etc etc...I might not be big or heavy but I am strong, my power to weight ratio is huge and thats simply from going to a gym and getting some advice, along with putting in the mileage on the bike for the legs workout. To be honest, Sockouk talks a lot of sense. I agree that muscles do get bored, you have to change your workout regularly, mine is approx every 8 weeks or so. If you want to bulk up have to do less reps and more weight but if you are naturally slim built you will have to eat more in order for major changes to occur. Don't worry about this too much whilst you are under 18 as your body is still developing and growing, just put in the base now and develop it when you get older. You should all be happy that you don't have the worry of being obese!

not read all replies as its a bit too late for that, but if you want to gain muscle i suggest getting a gym membership and getting a decent program and going around 3 times a week. Protein supplements are really good for putting on more muscle mass but a good diet is a necessity.

Also if you have hardly any body fat (10% or less) it means a six pac will show, so get doing those crunches and get on a bench with variable inclines and do a load of sit ups.

Seen some dodgy info in other posts but you should be aiming for 3 sets of 8-12 (12 if you want to get bigger) reps on weights (i recommend free weights where possible) and max reps for sit ups etc.

Remember to have a balanced workout, its no use caning the biceps and never working your triceps etc.
Id say to start off going 3 times a week do chest/tri's mon, legs wed, back/bi's fri (or whatever days suit you). If you join a decent gym they should sort you out with a program and give you all the info you need.

I agree with freejam, because at the end of the day, those chaps at the gym are the pros. Or even just go down do your local 'meat-heads gym' and find someone there to ask.

Also, at 15 i wouldnt worry, I finished uni at 21 and weighed a mere 11 stone (i'm 6 foot 3). I was blowing in the wind. Within 6 months (of eating properly and obviously getting older) I went up to 14.5 stone. I then played more sport etc and am now around the 12.5-13 mark.

I have been weight training since before christmas, and although i havent actually put any weight on, I have toned up.

So I wouldnt worry about what you actually weigh. Especially at 15!
• lol lucky sod im 14 and cant seem to loose it, im 6ft 8 ish and 10 stone 11 pounds.

Do you mean 6 foot 8 or 5 foot 8? Cos if you do mean 6, then surely you're underweight, and if you do mean 5 foot 8 then that weight seems fine to me.

I lost the weight by just playing football. Played 5 a-side three times a week and it went off really quickly. And my fitness levels obviously increased loads.
• ii 5ft 8 but discovered im am actually 5ft 10 today, stupid old tape measure.

Just wait 'til you're past 30! You'll be posting on how to loose weight.... I didn't 'fill out' until I was in my mid to late 20s. As long as you are fit then thats ok, it doesn't matter what size you are.

Go to a gym (council ones are cheap) and get booked in with one of their trainers. They know how to train to get the results you want and will show you correct technique. The main thing is to do it safely. I've been using the gym for 10 years and I used to read magazines about it too but I still organise any routine with the instructors as they know more than me and keep up to date with the latest news and safety issues. . I'm 5'7" and 12 stone and don't train too much for muscle mass. The science behind how muscles develop from different stimuli is a huge and complex subject (fascinating too if you're into that kind of thing) but there's a lot of crap out there and if you try and study it on your own you might injure yourself. You also need to eat properly. Professional help is best.
