I have a lot of new shiny bits to put on my old hardtail frame, and i am wondering whether to attempt it myself. I have stripped it down to the frame with forks attatched, but as a bike maintainence novice, i am wondering whether to just give it to my LBS to do.

they want œ60 to build it up, including refacing of BB and headtube, hub and headset service ( which i lack the tools for ) and full setup.

should i give in to the easy option, or bite the bullet and invest in more tools ??

Read the park tools linky in the sticky at the top of the tech forum. contains most of the info you'll need to fix/repair a bike. and lists all the tools necessary.

cheers , but i'm not short of info . just wondering whether its worth buying the tools for hub and headset servicing , and going at it with no experience .... or getting the bike shop to do it, in with a full build.

No. Get your LBS to do it. Then, when parts start to go wrong, buy the necessary tools.

Even getting your LBS to just face the BB and fit the headset will set you back œ15-20 maybe. Then you will need new BB tools and a decent set of allen keys, a cassette lockring tool, grease and time.
