  • I've used Jenson and have to say the service is excellent. They may ask for confirmation of ID, i.e. copy of your passport and copy of your credit card, I believe this depends on the value of the order. Word of warning however, you will get stung with duties. They use UPS for deliveries to the UK (I'm assuming you're from the UK of course)and duties will have to be paid upon delivery.

after imnport tax and shipping there's not much difference in price unless your buying sale items.

  • I agree it depends what you're buying. I managed to save approx œ100 on a new Mongoose Teocali Comp. Jenson were knocking them out for $999, exchange rate was sure as dammit 2 for 1.

A mate of mine uses these guys and swears by them.

It depends if you get caught for import duty. and even how much you get done for depends on what mood the guy who picks your parcel up is in.

  • No offence RSU but it's got nothing to do with anyone's mood. The duties and taxes depend on the description and value entered on the airwaybill by the shipper. Some companies in the US and elsewhere may enter the description as a gift etc. But the reputable companies won't. Goods despatched these days actually clear customs whilst in transit and the Courier company is just a collector of duties and taxes for HMRC. They pay the duties and then recoup from the consignee.

so i get the company to send it to my relations in america, and then they repackage it as a gift and post it to me? Or is that illegal tax evasion...?

  • Technically if you pay for it and do that it would be. But it would be virtually impossible for anyone to trace and match the 2 "movements". Not wanting to put ideas in your head but Jenson offer free shipping within the USA ;)

be aware that many companies will not honour warranties on goods bought overseas, so if you crack your frame / fork there is little obligation to assist you

this can make the saving of œ100 on a frame irrelevant [xx(]

  • Rob, I hear what you're saying and it's a good point, however most things you buy today are disposable and if you're lucky enough for them to last, most people normally get bored and fancy a change/upgrade anyway. If you use a reputable company you can expect to pay duties, but you can also expect them to honour warranty periods. Anyone planning to buy from the US needs to sit down and review worst case scenarios like I did. I over budgeted the duty payments and realised I'd still make a considerable saving. Prior planning and preparation and all that.

Marking a parcel as a gift wont make it exempt for duty. Only if the value of the package is declared as under $30 will it be exempt. I have imported a few things lately and the supplier has put a much lower value on the parcel. I guess if it goes missing then you only get back the value on the package.....
