Hiya,
I'm currently living in Canada, and due to my visa running out, me and my Santa Cruz blt are having to come back to the UK (sob sob!)
Anyway ... obviously I don't want Air Canada to screw up my bike whilest in transit, so does anyone have any top tips of how to get you bike on and off a plane in one peice without it being broken for me?
Packing tips, hard bike boxes versus card-board etc?
Cheers
Chris

Tip 1: There is nothing you can do. The baggage handlers are going to smash your bike into tiny pieces. They always do.
Tip 2: If you're lucky, it'll just be into tiny pieces, not infinitessimal pieces.

Can I just point out, they aren't tips, they are what we call 'warnings'...
Anyways, you can invest in a bike bag.
A hard one
A cheap one
The hard one will protect it, but is very expensive.
You could also put a 'HANDLE WITH CARE' lable on it.

Something round here tastes bad. Could be plain old bad taste.

same story, easy-jet snapped the swing-arm on my mates M1, tehn told him to sod off when he tried for insurance even though we paid extra to put bikes in.
a soft case should be ok really, take the stem/bars off wrap them, put spacers between the lever and bar then tape along the fork legs.
MAKE SURE you fit spacers (either proper ones, or taped in pieces of wood or similar) between the fork legs and the swing-arm. These are the bits that get crushed when they put other luggage on top of your bag.
take your pedals off, wrap them so they don't scratch things. Take the seat and post off or put them as low as possible.
uber wrap everyhing. should be ok

My advice would be "don't bother, drive if possible".
Put wheels and frame and other solid parts in a soft bikebag, then mechs, brakes, forks etc, into your other hold luggage wrapped in clothing for protection.

Let down your tyres, otherwise the decompression in the cargo hold can make them burst. It may be better to send your bike via an international courier rather than fly with it, it will be more expensive but you can get better insurance cover and chances are they will be more careful.

Do not buy the cheap one.
My bike got scratched in that on a train when I was loading it on and off. Its basically a fabric bag. Also when I lifted it with the bike in the strap snapped.

Sometimes it overheats. You have to make sure it's in a ventilated place all the time.

My mates took their M3 and Stinky to Whistler from the uk, and they bought hardback bike bags and lined them with bedding. Quilts, pillows etc. Wedged the bike sin and when they got there, they were in fine condition.
Although i do know someone who went to lesgets with a turner and his super T's got snapped...
