Memory Map and GPS

I'm thinking of getting the Memory Map software and a GPS of some variety, but wondered if anyone has any experience of using a bike mounted GPS, and could recommend one that works well with the MemoryMap software?
On the MemoryMap website they variously suggest Garmin Vistas, or running the software on a PocketPC or even a smartphone. now, a smartphone would be handy, but has anyone actually tried navigating on a bike with one?
Otherwise, any tips on GPS selection gratefully received.

El Cap uses a Garmin something-or-other when he rides, I believe he's happy with it.
Smartphones with built in GPS tend to not have great receivers, so you'd need a separate bluetooth/wired receiver to make the most of it. Plus, they're not as tough as the garmin by far!
Try and get El Cap's attention at lunch time, that's when he usually prowls the forum.

Then your book is probably a very short prejudiced one that does not show a sense of humour. I bet it didn't get very good reviews.</i></font id="size1">

My Dad bought a Garmin GPS for his bike a couple of months ago, he also bought the memory map software for our area. He just went for the most basic Garmin one the eTrax it think, the mian reason for this is that the reviews say that the mapping software on the mapping ones isn't very good. I was supprised at how little it cost, it was only about œ70 iirc but then theres also the bike clamp and the lead to the computer.
As Tartanyak said the garmin ones are very strong, my dads has come off quite a few times when hes fallen and theres only a few stratchs on it.0 -
ok thanks.... main reason for asking is that i'll most likely buy via mail order, so other peoples' experiences are useful when you can't see the thing first and check whether it looks any good!

Dont forget that the memory map software will not show up on the GPS unit itself. With Garmin units you will need to buy the corresponding Topo software for your GPS in addition to Memory Map. You only use the memory map software on your pc to plan, upload, dowloads trcks and routes etc.0

I use Memory Map V5 along with a Garmin eTrex Vista, and whilst the combination is great for plotting routes ridden (and giving you elevation, speed, and track data), I find the printed map from Memory Map, or even an OS 1:25,000 map is by far the better way to navigate.
You can mark Memory Map waypoints, and then transfer the route to the Garmin, which will then guide you to the next waypoint, however in my opinion it's more trouble than it's worth. You generally need to set any turn waypoints offset by 100 feet or so, otherwise you find that you've overshot the turn point when the GPS updates to the next waypoint. The GPS will also only point you in the direction of the next waypoint, it won't direct you along a track.
Don't get me wrong, I think both the GPS and the Memory Map software are indispensable tools, it's just that I think navigation by map is the way to go.
