My insructor said the same though. Admitedly mine was an idiot upon reflection. I failed 1, got refused a test then passed this one!

Its the standard though. 15 minors is acceptable, therefore I made it to an acceptable standard. I was refused a test because there was a stone chip in my windscreen.

I understand that you've passed, and i'm pleased for you (i remember how it felt) but as a recently passed driver, do you not think that if the pass mark was no more than 5 minors then maybe the roads would be a bit safer?
Im really not trying to piss on your fire, it's just a subject i have quite strong opinions on.

No, because the most unsafe parts of driving are people going too fast for their abilities, the conditions and their car. Minors are generally silly, unimportant things. They obviously aren't particularly dangerous, or they would be a dangerous major, resulting in a test failure.

And surely the more minors you get, the lower your ability? Thus lowering their 'safe' speed making it easier for them to stray into unsafe speeds.

Can you actually drive? Remember when you did your test? Remember what little things minors were? Hence the name MINORS. If they are majors, then you fail your test, because, in certain situations, they could be dangerous.
Minors are just that - minor occurences, where you haven't done _everything_ perfectly, but remain in complete control of the car, so, therefore, perfectly safe.

Anyway, do you really think that how someone drives in their test bears any resemblance to how they will be driving in 6 months/1 years time?

It doesn't, because everybody has to drive carefully in their test, keeping to speed limits and all that, else they'd fail. The way to make people drive like that all the time, is NOT to make the driving tests harder to pass.

If the tests are even harder to pass, then people will get more fustrated that they still don't have their licence, so when they do, they will want to vent that fustration, and they'll be more likely to be driving dangerously than if they had taken a normal test.

If it was 5 minors I'd be pretty annoyed, I got 6. Two for my hands on the steering wheel doing a 3pt turn. Do you really think that makes me unsafe?

It comes down to nerves to be honest.

I absolutely sh*t myself when I took my test a while back, and got 10 minors.

I was by no means a good driver, in fact I drove like a d*ck until I wrote my car off and almost killed myself and my best mate (albeit the actual accident wasn't my fault).

I know people who are much worse drivers than I was who had 5 minors or less.

Say someone was driving in second gear when they should be in 3rd, and they get a minor. And another for being 6 inches too far away from the cirb, they shouldn't be able to drive?

That's ridiculous, Thantos you clearly know nothing of road safety.

Instructors tell you how to pass a test, not how to drive. Nobody drives how they passed after 6 months.

Anyway, well done. Drive safe, and respect the road. I was bitten last year in a crash on the M6, not fun. Written off car, increased insurance, and the memory of the crash. Keep it safe, and enjoy.

Minors dont mean much.

I got 5, 4 of which were for observation. Someone tell me why not checking your mirrors every 10 seconds is unsafe?

Its all about jumping throught the hoops they set out for you to jump through. Its because actual safety is hard to moderate, so they have to come up with silly little rules. Hence why you are allowed so many minors. If they failed you just for being unsafe (I.E. just majors), and did away with the minors, then fair enough.
