The I Bought The Wrong Bike Thread

i have come to the conclusion that I bought the wrong bike. Todays ride confirmed it. While its very good on the realy rocky stuff its not realy good on anything else. I went on a mates hardtail and it was soo much faster on singletrack and etc. I cant ride the bike everywhere like a hardtail should. Its not my lack of fitness either as I could easily get up the hills on a rocky mountain slayer when my bike didnt.
Im gonna sell it for a more flickable hardtail then by a full on downhill full sus as that seems the best option

More gears and a lighter wheelset would be a start, no?

What bike do you have then? I take it you were only doing a bit of XC when you started to struggle?

The trailstar is more than capable for that sort of stuff, as said above ligher wheels, tires, and possibly a change of forks.

Yes just get lighter wheels and tyres, will make a massive difference, plus a long seat post. I cant get a long enough one for my Dmr so pedalling is always comprimised and yes its not as quick as my Azonic XC but its brilliant as an all round bike, round the street, more DH like singletrack etc and its fine with only 9 gears.
If you wanted a hard tail that flew on single track or climbed quickly, why did you even consider a 30+ lb strong semi jump bike?
As for the not being flickable etc. Unless it gets mega bumpy, my Dmr is quicker downhill than my Azonic by a fair bit due to the more relaxed geometry, longer travel and far better Pike forks. I dont jump as such but small <2 foot things its perfect, it just feels so right in the air unlike the Azonic which puts you over the front too much (not slating that, its a all round xc bike, shouldnt be in the air much!)

Long seatpost, seat back on rails, better tyres, lighter wheelset, maybe a fork with travel adjust - with your backside so far over the back, it's good to be able to lower the front on climbs.

i do have a huge seatpost...
im gonna switch to 2.35 tyres over 2.5s and see if i can swap my wheels for 721s

If it's that sort of riding your wanting to do 721's are overkill, 321's would be a better bet.

I just put some of the 2.3" kevlar dmr moto tyres on my Trailstar and they seemed good at the weekend. Your fork as well is a great fork....for jumping. I mean they weigh about 1500 pounds and are only 100mm, set of u-turn pikes like I have would transform it. Could flog the dj's on ebay etc but at some point you have to draw the line. Do the cheap things for now, tyres is a good start and go from there

well 721s arent much heavier than 321s and i do ride quite hard..
the forks are at 130mm and i am considering pikes
