could i fit in a room that measures:
part A) L:196cm x D:81cm x H:230cm
part B) L:244cm x D:276cm x H: 230cm

the beer can size is roughly L:6.5cm x D: 6.5cm x H:15cm

i worked it out as 25,560 cans. but a friend managed to get just over 30 thousand. so i'm at a loss. who is right?

so yea, thats a lot of beer. though alarmingly i'm almost bored enough to work out how much it would cost to acquire that much beer.

did you round the number up or down though?

I did it the (seemingly) simple way. by working out how many cans would fit along one wall, then multiply that by the number along the other wall. giving the amount of cans to cover the floor. then multiply that by the amount of cans that could stand on end from floor to ceiling. however i have no idea if that is right or not. its been a while since i did maths of any description, and i used to suck at it while at school [xx(]

i worked out that volume of a can, then the volume of the 2 rooms. Then divided the total volume of the rooms by the volume of the can.

and i rounded it down because you can't round it up as there isn't actually any space for the .8 of a car you would be rounding up.

i worked it out as... 30202.130177514792899408284023669 cans, so thats 30202 cans.

i worked out the volume of the rooms, added them together, then worked out the volume of the can, and divided the two

    <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

But then you adding the volumes of the 2 rooms together means your fitting them into one big room not 2 smaller parts, Which would change the number you could fit down each wall and up to the celing,

I did the 2 rooms seperately and then added the cans in each room up, Was that wrong?

    havent fallen off,

well presumably the dimensions given for the rooms were internal, hence it doesnt really matter whether you add the 2 or not.

the room is L shaped, the smaller part branching off from the bigger area. no walls or anything [:)]

  • Have people taken into account that the cans are round, and will leave space between eachother?

not quite, as you're treating them as two seperate rooms. the beer cans dont actually fit in fully, so you will be losing spare volume.

what the question should be, is the cans have a radius of 3.25cm, and a height of 15cm, that would have confused many people, as im guessing people would use [Pi*r(squared)]* height to find the volume, it would make for some funny workings out.

you dont need to, as the question is taking into account that the cans are not cylindrical, more like a cuboid (is that what a 3d rectangle is called?).

yea. i took the volume of the can as being its equivalent as a cuboid. though you would get a different value if you used the value of an actual can (500cubic Cm) how ever this would be the volume of a liquid inside the can, rather than the equivalent space occupied by the cna itself.

    if that makes sense.

I'm confused. You want the answer to room one or two?

  • The cans would tessellate though, meaning if you put them in a staggered formation, they would fit closer together...
