Newbie MTB buyer advice please

Completely new to this mtb game but want one! set myself abudget of no more than œ400 - mainly to go XC with mates who are into this (I aint rode a bike in 20 years!)

Any views please...I have seen a 2007 specialized hardrock sport (hydraulic disc) and a Giant Terrago (Hyd disc) for about œ390. WHic one is best or are ther better? Want hydraulics apparently!

    Well i know that the Hardrock is very f'king heavy-notice its nickname(lardrock) so weight wise probably the Terrago. Performance wise, i have no idea, but perhaps it would be a good idea if you went to a shop and tried both bikes out, just to see which one you have the feel for. That way you will know if Spesh's are the bikes for you.

    They are not hydros on the Hardrock Sport Disc, they are mechanical discs. And in my experience I rate well set-up V's over mech discs anyday.
