Im looking for a new crankset as my Suntour square taper has had it.
I have been looking at external bearing All mountain cranksets for about œ60. They will be going on my Tyax. I know everyone will suggest hones but i cant afford them, I have found these alternative's
FSA Moto Mega-exo
Truvativ Firex GXP
They seem good for the money but i would like your opinions.
Also I know getting the BB shell faced makes the bearings last longer but is it absolutly nessacary for the cranks to last at least a year?

Predictable recommendation, unpredictable price.

I dont trust ebay, postage is an arm and a leg! Out the the two the FSA looks stronger and the rings are Cromo and not cardbord so i think ill go with them.

What about getting the BB shell faced is it absolutly nessacary. I know it improves the life of the bearings by making the parrallel on the frame but how long will they last with out having it faced?

Depends how badly out of line the shell is in the first place.

if your dad is an engineer he should tell you to take it to someone who has the correct tools for the job.

if they supply the crankset it should be included in the cost.
