I could really do with some help, I haven't ridden for a good five years but once upon a time in my youth I took things quiet seriously, I had a nice little Identiti Dr Jekyll based bike.

im looking to but something I can make a 5 mile commute every day with, but still go out on the weekend on something fun without breaking it.

Im not so much of a cross countrier.

I'd like a agile little hard-tail, but an concerned about the commute.

Any advice or recommendations would be very appreciated.

Pete

Kona and Specialized have nice bikes in your price range that will be as happy on the trails as on the comute. See if you can stretch to an extra set of tyres or better another set of wheels so you can have road and trail tyres depending on what your up too

yeah. i thought i would probably end up with a different set of wheels / tyres anyway.

do you think a hardtail like the old Identitis with a more road based tyre would be too much like hard work on a commute?

as i say, its been a good few years since i have rode

The identitys tend to be quite small and if you want it to be remotely comfortable you'll need something a little bigger. Although I dont know the full Identity range so maybe they do something a little more 'all day' now. I like the Kona range and always have as some of there HT's are more than capable of taking the knocks of some quite hard riding (I Dirt Jump and free ride on my old chute) whilst still packing some all day trail comfort

The Dr jekyll is available in XL, i'm 6'3" and found it really comfortable on long rides.

Identiti Mr hyde would be worth looking at. although a fair bit over your budget. could look at frame, and cheap components to start with. and upgrade as time goes by [:)]

i once again come for advice, after much reading of the interwebs and forum i have drawn up a list, i know i need to test as many as possible, for any of these i will have a spare set of slicks for the commute, but on the weekend i would like to whack the wheels back on and do some trails.

is there any on this list i should avoid, as i say its been a few years, i have included the fury as its highly rated by some, i would get someone local to build it.

i know its a mixed list but.....

    Carrera Fury
    Claude Butler Cape Wrath Disc
    Commencal Absolut 2
    Felt Q720 Disc
    <s>GT Chucker 1.0</s>
    GT Avalanche 1.0 Disc
    Kona Blast Nine
    Kona Shred
    Marin Northside Trail
    Norco Rival
    Orange G2
    Scott Contessa 20
    Specialized Hardrock Pro Disc
    Specialized Rockhopper

    I have a 14" Identiti 666x.

Rides nice for me, but im 15, ride park and am 5'7".

Would probably be no use to you, but my 666 is ALOT stronger than my old Chucker.

I'd strongly advise you keep away from Chuckers....

I have a hardrock, and although i ride a good 50 or so miles on it a week, it probably isn't the best bike for it, and you can get something nicer in that price range

gents, just an update, i was planning on ordering the kona - perhaps a heart buy, rather than head, so nipped into the local halfords to get some bits and pieces and saw an 06 fury in my size for œ400 - selling off 06 in the shop, needless to say i tried it, and its currently in my garage after a good ride, lovely bike on first impressions, great spec for the cash.

thanks for all your help and advise, much appreciated.

Good bike for the money you got there, Just be wary of halfords serviceing/Do it yourself if you no how to.

just taken the fury back to the shop, indexing is out, disc on the rear binds pretty bad, chain falls of on the front on high and low gear.

I would have sorted it myself however i refuse to do all this on a new bike.

    I should have known better.....

where did you get it from? That sounds like the unhandy work of a 'Bike Hut Bod' from Halfrauds.

yeah, its a bikehut job, I have never bought a halford bike before, always been lbs.

But for my budget i was buying with my head, and for the cash the fury seems the best all round spec.

i had the hope halfords *may* have built it right.....
