Rampage / Nevegal - Tyre Choice

edited June 2007 in MTB general
ive pretty much narrowed my tyre choice down to these 2

they are a very similar tread pattern, the same size, and similar in price

has anyone rode both and could tell me any differences, or any general comments really about either, all is helpful as im pretty new to this

my riding will mostly be trails, singletrack etc, my main worry is wet roots and rocks, but ive got a friend who does downhill and he has a babit of taking me down some scary stuff, loose rock downhills are a problem at the moment

currently i have the OE fitted Bontrager Jones 2.1 tyres, pretty sure they are the ACX version

nevegals again. i have them on my norco hardtail. the grip has lasted ages and i learnd all my skills in dh on that bike and on those wheels! i still use it now up at the forest of dean when i want to try new stuff then i get out my 224 from the van and try it on that. ive never had to change the tyres and they're still goin strong!

I have the Nevegal (2.5) on the back of my bike, good tyre but the front one ripped right through on a stick of all things, so that got chucked in the garage.. repairable but its a pretty big hole. so moral of the story, dont hit big pointy ended sticks! but yes good tyres. plenty of grip, but they wear out pretty quick on tarmac!

I have nevegal on rear, I really don;t rate it on the front. Washes out really too easly. In the end I put a single ply High roller on the front and its sweet.

Nevegal!!! Awsome for dh,fr + dj!!! But try to keep them off the tarmac as much as you can, because they wear down quite quickly on the black stuff!

no it doesn't. just dont go skidding about all over the place, that aplies to every tyre. cuz iff you skid on the tarmac it'll wear down any tyre no matter how good or pricey the tyre is.

Well, mine have worn quicker than my mates high rollers, but I am also only running 40psi.

yeh, marazocchi have moved production to taiwan or something(cant remember what the shop said but im pretty sure it is taiwan)the shop said they're the same quality fork as before just marzocchi can sell them for cheeper because they arn't having to pay much for labour.

i love the nevegals, got them stock on both my norco full suss and hardtail. They do wear down quite quick on tarmac but not as fast as some ive tried.
gazzer1966: marzocchi only produce the low end forks in taiwan. they do all of their top end stuff: 66s 888s etc in Italy.

im going to a shop tomorrow which has Rampage in stock, but they are a 'sport' version it says on the packet and are a lot cheaper than the normal one, they are still a folding tyre aswell, anyone know what the difference could be

well i found out the difference

different compound, and no snake bite protection

so not as good a tyre basically
