...but I'm going to suggest an amount because I know otherwise I'll get like 10p or something.

I'm absolutely shitting myself, so I was wondering if, from your experiences, is there a certain manner in which you should go about these things?

Unless you can justify your request, keep quiet.

I've just gotten a load of qualifications so I'm a "qualified administrator", I think that justifies more money, plus the fact they are paying me an office juniors wage when they said I wasn't going to be that any more.

Yeah, its not too common a thing to do. Most people look for a real payed job instead. You could always say "I'm going for a new job inless you pay me. ..blahh blah. etc.."

Thats the easiest way for an employer to turn round and say "Fine, look somewhere else and we'll find new staff".

I remember reading somewhere once that there are days of the week that you are more likely to succeed with asking for a raise...

I remember the day Monday being on it, but it might have been the best day, or the worst :-

I was kinda hoping of around the œ12,000 mark as a lady at the recruitment agency said I should really be on that kind of money due to my qualifications and experience. [B)]

    how old are you?
    what are you doing?!?

12k is VERY low if it's any sort of 'decent' job.

I'm an administrator in an accountants firm, I've been here 2 years. You think œ12,000 is low, I'm only on œ9,000 at the moment!

    EDIT: And I'm 19, almost 20.

Its always the job not the qualifications. From what I can tell they don't pay your much as you don't do much. I suggested the "i'll get another job if you don't..." to see if they are willing to pay you more in the same position. If not its hunt time.

  • You're SOOOO not going to get a 33% pay rise...

Why not just go somewhere else if you have the qualifications?

Just to put a damper on things, you'd get more working full time in McDonalds. Seriously, look for something else. Your future will be feckered if you don't start earning higher soon.

Ah well, I'll just get a new job.

The only reason I'm on here all the time is because there is never anything to do until after Summer.

However, once you've applied and been accepted for a new job, talk to your boss - Occasionally they'll be willing to match/exceed the money because it can be less hassle than training someone new.

Ha ha! Yes, well tbh there isn't much to be trained on except how to use some really out of date software that no one else uses anymore and how to make peoples drink the way they like them.

To the OP, If you've got some recent qualifications but you're working on archaic software you may find that your real world experience might not be up to your salary expectations. Yes it isn't the greatest salary in the world and your giving the impression that they don't really work you to the bone.

You've got age on your side so by all means look for a new job but be realistic regarding your qualifications / experience v desired salary.

True, but at least this gives the impression to future employers that she has a real job. McD's is not a real job.

H, you might want to mention what you said to us a little while back, about how you have no money left over once you've paid your food and rent, and perhaps mention you're looking to move out so you'd have to start paying real rent, not what your parents charge you. I dunno though, I'm no expert at these things, but that does show to them you don't just want it so you can buy some new dresses but because you can't really get by without it.
If you don't get it, or don't get much, I'd look for a new job. 9k is appallingly bad.

They will probably decline because you;ve let them walk all over you all this time.

Tell them you feel you need to be earning 12k to be able to comfortably cover your cost of living. If they reject, go somewhere else.
