There have been a few threads on this over the past couple of weeks:

The outcome of me asking was buying a Spes Rockhopper Pro. Having spent some time looking I felt it was one of the best all round packages for the price. Has to be said I didnt really look at the Scotts as everyone said they were ace for racing, but a little harsh for a long days ride.

Focus Raven has a pretty good spec for the cash. Fox F100RLC forks are top dollar and the wheels/gears/brakes are all worthy components. The frame got a good write up as well.

I like the look of the Saracen Zen 3. Got a good spec, as well.
Ignore the name, its a good bike.

It is a great bike but its quite aggressive for XC. The Kili Flyer 1 is a great looking bike which is a bit better suited to XC.

The Zen 3 does look a decent bike, I agree with the comment about ignoring the brand name. Saracen don't have the best rep nowadays but the Zen 3 looks a very good bike

Same type of bike would be the Marin Rocky Ridge, as a sort of hardcore XC/AM bike. The marin would get my vote for allrounder XC hardtail but it's a close run thing with the Zen 3.

The Rockhopper Pro Disc looks more of a pure XC bike and would be a good one to go for if it's more XC than hardcore XC/AM riding you do.
