Best 'V' Brakes

I've got no choice but to use 'V' brakes on the rear of my bike as the frame will not take a disk (trust me it won't), so what are the best 'V' brakes out there, got a set of old XT's on at the moment but they are well past their sell by date.

Personally i think you can use any of the avids. to really improve braking i'd recomend spending some money on better pads perhaps with a softer compund as this will vastly improve braking.0

Avid arch rivals have fans, but there are clearance issues, which you will always have with v's

Don't think i will have "clearance issues" as i don't at the moment, i just want a good strong rear brake. I will go for Avid's but i wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.
What pads would be soft, just need an example...0 -
I have a pair of arch rivals on my old mtb.
Would recommend them to anyone who is using V's0 -

Avid Arch Rivals get my vote - very, very good. I had some and couldn't believe how much better they were than the Shimano LX they replaced. I have discs now but Arch rivals are the next best thing.
Cheap as chips on CRC too. Might find them cheaper but free postage helps. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=1182

they don't appear to have rear ones on crc, shouldn't be an issue, also what levers would you recommend with arch rivals?

Thought about Hs33's? All the power and feel of disc brakes, in a rim brake [:)]

In the manuals they tell you not to use any other levers than Avids. I decided to experiment, ignoring this advice, and set them up with my Deore levers - they worked fine. I expect they're better suited to an Avid lever if you're willing to shell out on some.
I'd try them with the lever you're currently running and if it's no good then look at some Avid's. I think the compatible ones are listed in the manual if my memory serves me correctly.

I have a set of Avid Ultimates not the Ti version and they are a work of art, light and on ceramic rims they are just as good as discs0

Have to say Avid Arch Rivals. I'm still using them as I just plain can't afford discs right now. They're great, haven't had any clearence issues with 2.35 tyres and the pads they come with are top notch too. Front and rear are the same which is why CRC might be saying they only sell front ones (I asked them before I bought mine from them).

XTR's every time, never let me down. no clearance issues even running a 2.4" tyre CRC have last years for œ30 or thsi years for œ40 each.0
