seat posts- long length, minimal insertion

ok, so i like my XC bikes to have a bit of a low stand over height so i can still throw them about, but this means for the longer uphills etc i need an uber long seat tube to get the saddle height needed [I'm 6'3]. All the 'long' seatposts i have seen/bought require a larger amount of minimum insertion of the post, which defeats the object of having a long post. Are there any seat posts which are long that don't need such a large amount of insertion?

You are aware of why there's a minimum insertion, aren't you? Of course it's going to increase as the post length increases.
You will find, though, that as the posts get longer, and the minimum extentions get longer, so too does the maximum extention.
What frame is it?

Some seatposts come in 450mm length and 90mm minimum insertion thus resulting in a 360mm length above seat tube clamp. BB to seat clamp in a 16 inch bike is about 410mm.410mm+360mm=770mm=aproximately 30.5 inches. You're quite tall but I doubt you can ride with your seat any higher than that without experiencing some unnecessary pain.0

I've just ordered a 410mm thomson post because i'm fed up of bending cheap ones and have a jump bike for xc, which gives me lots of standover room for my pendulous balls! I'll let you know how that comes up, it is coming from the states though (œ41 oh yeah) so may be a while.

The 410mm Thomson posts have a ridiculously tiny minimal insertion. Probably what you want [:)]

I spoke to the retailer and they said that the give lengths are usable post, not total length.

I'd agree with STU, get a Thomson post
They're pure quality and they do them in 410mm lengths which are plenty long enough for most uses.Dave S0 -
hey guys, thanks for the help. I'll look out for the thompson ones

the minimal insertion limit of the frame is more important than that of the post!kester0
-
It's not more important, you've just got to use whichever of the two is the longest.

thats what i meant!kester0

I'd say it was less important because you *can* cut down the extension of the seat tube to decrease the minimum insertion, but cannot reduce the minimum insertion of the post. Hang on, that wouldn't actually change the available seat height would it?
I have finals tomorrow so my brain is a little scrambled and i cannot think.

what do you mean by"cut down the ext of seat tube"?kester0
-
Thinking about it, i was wrong, but my idea was to chop of a bit of the seattube that extends beyond the toptube, as generally you have to have post inserted past the toptube in the frame. But whatever you have to do then you have to have the post in that far, so you might as well keep it as long as possible.
