ok i have the cassette off and ive fitted my gusset ss conversion kit. no problems there.
now im imagining complete tech free ss bliss but this is shattered as i see that my qr skewer isnt long enough to fit from drop out to dropout, can you use qr with ss?
i have horizontal dropouts so i was previously using hangers for the mech and disc brake but now i cannot use a disc brake is this correct?
and how does the wheel stay in place? wont it just move from side to side? it looks really bare and im panicing!
ok stupid questions out the way. thanks

Was the QR long enough before?
Yes you can still use a disc brake.
www.billys.co.uk Look for Halo Porkies they're XL QR skewers.

i dont have disc mounts so hw can i use discs? they were previously attatched using a hanger.
yes the qr did fit before but that was when i was using the hangers. if i stay with the hangers rather than using my horizontal dropouts could i just get a tensioner?0 -
What frame is it?

What frame, and pictures of the setup, before SS and current would be helpful.

its a kona explosif.
i want to keep my rear disc so im going to use the vertical dropouts of the hangers and get a tensioner. using the hangers also solves the skewer problem as they take a good 20mm off of the dropuot to dropout distance.
cant see why that wouldnt work?
aside from that my bike looks so clean now. my bars are more spacious, i only have two cables and its lighter too. gotta love it!0 -

If you have sliding vertical dropouts (you seem to call them hangers) you don't need a tensioner. Adjust the chain tension by positioning the dropouts.0
-
Yes, you're meant to keep the dropouts on the frame, undo the bolts and pull them back to tension the chain. You don't take them off to go singlespeed.

And the solution is to remove a complete link, if it is then too short, you may need a half link thingy.

his frame has sliding dropouts!kester0

Yes but if he has moved them back and it is still loose then he needs to shorten the chain. You still need tension with sliding dropouts, plus it doesn't look like he has an inch of slide, i might be wrong though because i'm not familiar with his dropouts.

i have shortened the chain as much as possible. ideally i would remove one more link but the pin wont come out of the link i would like to remove so i still have some slack.
dropouts are slid all the way back now but still a little slack.0 -
how do you know its only 1 link,he might still have enough chain for gears!kester0
-
why wont it come out?kester0
-
no idea why it wont come out.
it alternates between ones that will come out and ones that wont so i had to pick the nearest possible link, hence the slack.0 -
try using tool from other side of chain or from above chainkester0

tried that one m80

how bizarre!kester0

my on-one doofer arrived this morning and i fitted it straight away. it sorts the slack out brilliantly. went out for a short one of about 5 miles. all i can say is my thighs are in for a hammering over the summer!0
