I come from the northwest, where ive got delamere 15 minutes drive away, and more recently discovered llandegna is about 25minutes away.
- However im currently at university in loughborough (near nottingham/leicester) and very much trying to get back into it.
I have access to a car in the form of my housemates landy (his also loosly into mountain biking and is interested in trying something out) but any great distances are really out. Espcially at 12mile/gallon!
Any thoughts?

Cannocks probably the closest if your wanting Downhill. You've not told us what sort of riding you want.
Cannock is about 60-70 miles from loughborough, I'm just down the road near colaville and it takes us about an hour maybe hour and ten mins to get there.

Aston hill is not in the midlands!
Your best bets are:
Cannock: beginners, those without travel, locals, good practice track if it's been wet very recently as it drains excellently. Longest run is 1:30, ish.
Hopton Castle: Car needed. Long walk up.
Bringewood: Car needed.
Kinnerton: (not totally sure this is on public land, but i'm sure i'll be corrected)
Shining Cliff: Reachable by train, if you know where you're going

Cannock Chase has a couple of down runs and a very good xc trail depending on what you fancy riding.

bringewood and hopton are a good distance from loughborough!at a guess an hour and a half. you can get to bringewood on the train, but its a monster road climb up to the woods.

Ok, sounds like theres a half decent choice then, ill have to start looking at multimap and arranging stuff!
- Its good to know there are places you could potentially get to via the train as well.
Im only really just geting back into this, but i'll be riding the rockhopper, got a mate on a p3, and a few others including my housemate and i guess where looking for somthing a bit challenging but not stupidly crasy. Certainly i enjoyed the 'blackruns' at Llandegna etc.
But yeah, cannock chase looks like the bees knees, ill look into it more tomorrow, but deffonatly looks like a plan.
- Its my birthday on the 26th and then we have exams till the second week of june. So the plan it to delay my birthday a fortnight or so and then go for a blast on the bikes.

I'm at Uni in Derby and the best places I have found are:
1: Little Eaton - Quite a bit of DH and XC stuff in the woods, always people there to meet and find new trails.
2: Cannock Chase - Love the place
