Trials..is it 'mountain biking'?

no it isn't. downhill was the first form of mountain biking. Cross country isn't mountain biking, it's road biking off-road ;-)

True, very true, that's why toe clips were used before clipless peddles were available and it was scary, clipless are for lightweights! As you say xc was just roadies going off road, though i do like my XC riding, perhaps i'm a frustrated roadie, oh god now i've got to learn to balance a silly little cap on my head with the peak folded up!0

trials was origanly rode and still is today on rocks which can before mainly of hills, moutains etc and trials is nothing like bmx yes some trials bike have 20 inch wheels the magority have 26 and dj/street is more like bmxing than trials.

That's what the wrist is for - gloves.
You know you're a biker when... ...your arms are brown, and your hands are totally white...

It depends on what you think Trials riding is. Ignorant people will see a trials rider do a 'trick' and automatically assume its BMX riding. It's just because they haven't bothered to look into what it really is, most likely because they aren't intersted. A lack of interest is no excuse for ignorance though. I am guessing you have an image of trials that involves an urban setting, lots of flow and rythm, use of spinning and almost choreographed movement. This is a form of Trials riding more commonly known as 'Street'. Yes it is closer to BMX but it isnt BMX riding. In general Trials bikes use small Jump or XC frames, stems, front rim; DH tyres, bars, hubs, rear rims, and so on, so how can you say it isn't a mountain bike?
Meh, Im happy calling myself a Mountain Biker. End of.

I think it all boils down to the fact that mountain biking isn't, and has never really been specifically about riding mountains, just riding off road on a more "rugged" bike than a road bike.
Trials is valuable skill - and by the right person, damned awesome to watch. Same thing applies to street etc.
We are all riding some variation on the theme of a "Mountain Bike" so I think we can all go around happily calling ourselves mountain bikers!
I don't see anything anywhere about how many gears a bike should have, or whether it has a usuable saddle before it's classed as a mountain bike!
That, and XC riders etc will probably be off the saddle on dh's too!!!
Nothing wrong with deciding to focus on a particular skill and develop on that, and getting the most suitable bike for it? Though I suppose it isn't as rad, cool or hardcore as doing it all on the one dodgey hardtail!
