Which car

05 06'ish focus hatch, or similarly aged megane estate. Both with low miles, under 10k say. Or a slightly older 03, 04 audi A4 avant or BMW 3 series estate. With a bit more miles on say 60k. Again both with diesel engines. All four of the cars described come in at around œ10k depending on spec. Thoughts?

Audi's depreciate less. Focus' do. BUT, if you ever have a bump, and dont want to claim via the insurance, you'd get raped by audi, not so much by ford, as you would be able to find the parts you need at a local scrappy.

If it was a toss up, same spec, same engine capacities, and similar price, and same mileage, it would be Audi any day.

Wouldn't touch BMWs.

Would be a 1.9 if it was to be the audi.

The only thing with the audi is that the ones that come within budget have all done no less than about 50k, usually around 70k. Whereas you can get a newer decent specced focus for the same price with like 5k on it.

Also why not the BMW? I know the 04'ish 3's have shocking crash test ratings.

Wouldn't worry too much about the milage on the Audi's TBH.

They share engines with the Golf, and my dad has a 3 year old one thats done 135,000 miles and still going strong.

Audi, think they do a 170hp 4 cylinder diesel, they'll be fast and get huge mpg. 10k would get you an 04 with 60,000 miles approx (cam belt mileage i should add), but for same money you could get anything like a focus or golf with very very little mileage, could be better off doing that if you're looking to sell the car on in a couple of years, if you're looking on keeping it for years and years, get the Audi.

The Honda Accord Estate might also be worth having a look at. Nice cars.

But , it will probably have similar miles to the Audi.

Probably will be keeping it for years, it's for my parents you see. They've had their last car for 8 years now, focus hatch. Whatever they get i'll end up on the insurance though at some point, so it's in my interests!

Avoid any French cars at all costs. There's nothing wrong with well maintained cars with 50K miles. Hell, depending on the model, a well maintained car could easily run to 200K plus.

also, just thought id mention my grandads L reg 7series has over 200k on the clock and still going strong, and the BMW 316i compact i learned how to drive in had 166k of learning in it and was fine.
high miles are only a problem if a tool has owned the car

I wanted an audi but the cash wouldn't stretch that far. But I got a mazdz 6 estate and I like it. Smooth, fast and good mpg.
