FAO: People who read CVs/hire people

1) How accurate is the adage that it should be kept to one page? If it's not at all, what should be specifically on the front page?

2) How do I make dropping out of uni sound good? I've just come to the end of two years there, so it's got to go on it as an explanation of what I did. I'm perfectly fine with explaining the hows and whys, but i'm not sure they belong on a CV. Or in how much detail.

Avi, i would expect 2 pages. page one ecademic and work related, page 2 vocational training and interests. page one may extend onto page 2 but not visa versa.

re uni it depends on how you put it and if you are looking to return to it or not.

Resumes are more a 1 page thing. CVs are longer, average around 2 I guess but not always.

I read a lot of what you might call low-level CVs so not that many have gone on to higher education. Some explantation is a must, a short honest paragraph should do it.

Basically I worked out I wasn't finding it interesting and had no real desire to go into anything approaching a relevant industry after it. And I failed all the exams (partly as a result of the first reason).

Not looking to return to it, really. I think I need to learn by doing rather than by being told.

I always go with a 2 page CV and a 1/2 to 1 age covering letter.

My CV is two pages, with two short paragraphs to explain myself and my last two years of employment / education at the start.

Definately bang-on two pages.

I'd put the Uni dates on, but no need to mention dropping it because if they're interested they'll be able to work it out by the dates anyway... a CV is all about getting an interview so if they really want to know they'll ask you.

You'd probably be able to transfer the credits to a different course... i think there's a 3-year window to do it in... a lot of people who switch to a uni in a different country use the points transfer thing... doesn't have to be the same course either.

Have you thought of travelling or Aid work?... that always impresses me on a CV.

What sort of job are you after anyway.

When I've got it written, I'm going to e-mail it to a few people (including Si on here) who look after computers, and see what they reckon I should be applying for/changing on it.

Join some temp agencies... they have loads of tech stuff... try and get your foot in the door of the financial services sector.

Mine is around 2 pages but it still does not get me a job i am working in Nottingham and travel from Doncaster every day for œ120 a week for a mobile phone dealship i am only 17 but its still only 2.20 a hour

any one needing a traine office guy ?

it easy said than done though cos i like the actual job its just the travelling aspect and the wages if the wages increased i wudnt be to fussed as i am driving and i wont have to use public transport

for applying for work placement years we get loads of example CV and help on writing good ones (all aimed for getting IT jobs)I emailed them to someone on another forum who found them useful

How do you feel about SQL, that seems to be the highest paid job in IT with non degree applicants

Well i get the train which is a tenner there and tenner back so Its a days wage plus a bus fair which is a tenner a week so i am looking 1day and half just for travelling

I am changing soom i hae a major argument the other day.

ALSO They have i have timed 2 hours every day to smoke to is that not descrimination on a non smoker? i feel a court case

Well i thought if i take tem to court for escrimination becasue of being a non-smoker which tunred me into a smoker to get more breaks from typing and the pc screen it has effected my health which is there fault

Well they see it as being slack its like i make tea so when i do i have a break and he got on my back about taking 10mins to make a cup of tea for 6 people.

I only take home œ150 a week really. But Pre Tax I earn œ230ish

I think he means it costs him œ120 a week to work (œ20 per day for train + œ10 per week for bus although that's only œ110). Either way, get the sack, get the soverence pay, report them for illegal wage.

Hi all long time no see well i did pack the job in got a interview tmoz nearly triple what i was working and its in doncaster where i live
