What is your opinion of using Crank Brothers 50:50 for Light XC use? Would you bother or would you go with something else? I'm also looking at Gusset Slim Jims.
I'm currently building up an '06 Rock Lobster (see signature for images).
Cheers guys.

I would steer well clear of CB 50/50's, if I were you. I had some for about 3 months and they were the biggest waste of money. Due to their convex (as opposed to the normally concave) pedal shape, they offered very little in the way of grip, the changeable coloured plates were so poorly made that the screw holes in my replacement set didn't line up with the screw holes on the main pedal body and the bearings in both pedals seized within three months of mainly dry XC riding.
If you're after flat pedals, I recommend the Shimano DX flat pedals. Relatively light and nice and grippy with longer pins fitted. The bearings are still running smooth after a year too.

Thanks for the input. To be honest I have heard very mixed reviews of them. They're like Marmite - either love 'em or hate 'em.
Which DX pedals were you mentioning - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=547

Yep, those are the Shimano pedals I meant. I can never remember whether they're DX or MX!

Yeah I agree with Cheesey - it's blatantly all about V12 mags...
I guess the only tw tty thing about DMR V's is that when you wrong-foot them (jumping or whatever), the crank can spin around and the sharp little threaded cylindrical spikes smack you right in the calf or the shin. And if you're wearing shorts there'll always be blood involved... and I'm always wearing shorts.
It's all good though.

I just prefer the feel and the freedom of flatties.
That said, I suppose I could add some toeclips which would save my shins a bit...
I used to use toeclips a few years back and they felt comfortable once I'd got used to them. They just look a tad, well, ooooooh!.
www.pinkbike.com/photo/?op=list&functio ... rid=1643610 -
Toeclips are evil, and if you're going to use toeclips, why not just use SPDs or other clipless pedals which are far safer.
As for slipping off pedals, it's not something I've done since I offloaded the DMR pedals in favour of DXs and Wellgo B52s, Been three years since I sliced a shin now.

To get any use out of toe clips you have to do the straps up as tight as if you were clipped in with SPDs. You then lose the advantage of SPDs in that you can no longer get your foot out.

That can happen, but rarely does if you're used to clipless pedals. For me, I would always have them on a road bike but not an a MTB, I rode a kona today on trails and it had clipless pedals, but I wished it hadn't as there are lots of situations on an MTB where you only might have to put a foot down, such as tight hairpins uphill. Thus, I'd unclip and put a foot down but if i'd been on flats I might not have had to. On a roadie the difference is you always know when you're going to have to stop and put a foot down, it's second nature after a bit like the way you always put the clutch in on a car before it comes to a complete halt.

I was a big fan of clipless until one day I replaced my old cleats with new cleats.
Happend above a big bank to a mud pit. Being new the clips, they released slowly sending me tumbling down the bank. CRACK! one broken scapular (shoulder blade).
Now on flats. But do miss the clipless on bumpy ground.
You need to be real sure you can get out of them instinctivly before tackling tricky terrain.

I'm thinking of getting me some Crank bros candys.
Will they be much better than my cheapo shimano ones and having no tightness adjustment, how tight do they come set up??

I've ended up getting some Ox Blood Red DMR V8's. Only œ22 and they're nice, comfy, grippy and light. Plus they look very nice

I use the Candy SL version and they have been excellent for me though the bearings don't seem to last very long. Ddooggie on here had a set of the Candy C version and had a problem with the pedal body coming away from the axel but i've never heard of any other cases of that happening.
If you are used to SPD pedals the lack of tension adjustment shouldn't make too much difference. Crank Brothers pedals come with multi release cleats which have varing angles of release which can take getting used to but the entry is crisp and clear which helps when you are in mud or just want to know you are clipped in.
I'd recommend a set.

v12mags.... not because i'm a weight-pimp, but because the effective mass is amplified when the rotational bits are heavy.

I've been riding clipless pedals for over 10 years. Only problem I've ever had not being able to release in time was on my road bike, when two of the three bolts holding a Look cleat fell out, so the cleat rotated on the shoe and didn't release - quick change of release foot was needed. I'm currently using Wellgo M3 with Ti axles on the XTC - faultless performance for over 12 months.
I have tried riding with flats on the Coiler, but I just don't feel I have the control over the bike and certainly don't have the ability to pedal in circles as you do with clipless.

Always use Shimano SPDs for proper XC or road (use flats for the commute just so I don't have to carry a spare pair of shoes). Would find it annoying without them now.
Just got some Crank Bros Egg Beater Cs from andrew156 (thanks again you kind kind man [:D]), so I'll let you know how I get on with them after my roadie ride with them tomorrow.0 -
i've just changed over from shimano SPD's to a pair of crank bro's MXC (as they're dead light and cheap as chips) how'ever im not 100% sure about them yet as they seem strange to clip into however de clipping is dead easy
as for flats, v12's good choice (i gave up on flats for XC as the back of my legs and shins have got scars on them due to slips from bunny hopping etc)0 -

Prettymuch everywhere is out of stock of the red ones at the moment, but Jamie from www.jejamescycles.co.uk did a special order from DMR for me last tuesday, and reckon they'll have been on Friday's mail plane.
