another waxing job

… so, I have seen these wax in a bag jobs by Silca, and I am tempted to join the band wagon, as it seems less faff than having a dedicated melting pot.

However, everywhere I read that neither Shimano nor SRAM quick links should be reused… which is a bit of a deal breaker.

Do you guys re use your quick links or invest in a new one at every wax job?

Personally I'd leave the waxing for drier weather. Rust is the main problem especially if there's any road salt about.

I've always just reused the quick links without issue. I don't think Wipperman issue a warning about reusing their quick links.

I reuse my quick links until the breaking and rejoining feels loose, which can be anything up to 10 times. But I also get pack of 6 replacement quick links from ZTTO on Aliexpress for about £5, so not a major issue when they do go.

Can concur on the waxing not being great for winter due to rust. I am trying it this year as I much prefer the feel of the drivetrain with wax (shifts just feel crisper). In the summer you can just run and run it with the occasional drip wax top up, but in the winter, keeping on top of things so rust doesn't form definitely tips it into "bit of a faff" territory. Am just going to get a couple of different chains to switch over when I need.

wipperman connex links are re-usable, fit/remove with fingers, no tools required

fwiw i've used ceramic speed ufo drip wax lube for years, ideal for hols with bike as there's no need for a melting pot etc.

you need to strip the chain fully before initial treatment, once done it takes about 5 minutes to re-apply which is done without removing the chain, i do it every 200-300km

aside from low friction/low wear, things stay very clean, the link makes it easy to remove the chain and run through a cloth if needed (did this after getting caught in a sandstorm a couple of weeks ago)

i use it year round, plenty of wet rides, not had any issues with rust (sram red 22 chains), i rinse with water if it's been in salty conditions and run it though a cloth to dry

my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

Always re-used quick links upto 11spd without issues on road and mtb/gravel. Haven't tried on 12 spd yet, I do have spares if required though.

Too many bikes according to Mrs O.
