Rear hub meltdown
My rear hub had a complete meltdown the other day. It started to feel 'sticky' and then all hell broke loose. It started to ride like a fixed gear i.e. the rear wheel going 'round would turn the cranks and then seemed to disengage completely so that now when I turn the cranks the cassette goes 'round without the back wheel moving at all. All this was accompanied by some horrible noises, and it looks like one of the pulleys in my derailleur exploded :-(
Anyone any idea what the hell happened? It is a Powertap GS hub (a DT Swiss 240) that had recently been rebuilt and serviced with a new set of bearings in the freehub - I'd barely used it since then.

Open it and look at the damage, sounds like something was not fitted correctly during service… or take it back to the shop that serviced it.

Pawls are goosed would be my guess.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
240 did not use to have pawls… more recently DT Swiss have gone cheap and abandoned the ratchet system… depends what he is got

Did they replace the ratchets or pawls whichever is in there?
With those symptoms I would say its likly pawls in there .Possibly wrong grease or lube on the service has caused it to bind up with the pawls closed really needs to be lighter lube to allow the pawls to engage and close when freewheeling or the spring / wire is toast .They really should have been replaced in the service as they cost about 10 quid
But as said above somethings not been done correct on the rebuild .
If its ratchets there are a few things it could be ,spring on either side done or the threaded insert star in the hub itself
Very easy freehub to disassemble to look
This is what a star ratchet looks like ,will literally pull off with the endcap off .That really thin washer on the left is often forgotten and it's very important

they have…. not sure which models have switched to pawls rather than the double ratchet, probably not the 240.

Perhaps some of the budget options have but the 340, 240 & 180 haven’t and likely never will.
