3rd party insurance

I’ve joined a local club following moving house and one of the questions on the joining form is “Do you have third party insurance”

This something I’ve never considered so does anyone on here have it. Or is something that’s covered in the legal bit of your house and contents insurance.

Cheers for any replies.

I've got it through British Cycling membership, never had to use it, but have gone through legal cover twice having been knocked off which worked well for me.

Not that I have used it, but apparently it is useful to stop car insurance companies suing you as a cyclist in attempt not to pay.

I have mine through London Cycling Campaign membership. There are likely better options for you.

when I read the my home insurance it appears to say that if anyone makes a claim against you for damage to property, personal injury or possessions or the like you are covered for this. Am I reading this wrong.

British Cycling won't entertain claims between cyclist both having BC membership and cover. Depends on what you need cover for.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

My home insurance seems to say if you have other insurance I.e British cycling. They won’t pay out.

Surely bike cover on home insurance is a different thing to third party insurance from the likes of British Cycling, Cycling UK etc.

The former would compensate you for the loss / damage of your bike, the latter is legal cover if you are in an accident or need to give compensation to the other party. That could run to a lot if for example you are found to be at fault for a crash with someone on the group ride who's self employed and can claim compensation for loss of earnings

A lot of cycling clubs will demand a BC membership number regardless of whether you have alternative cover like insurance from a specialist like Yellow Jersey that includes some form of third party. It's quite a lot of hassle for them to check out if the terms of different policies check out whereas BC / Cycling UK are known to meet the standards.

You need it to race, and it's not very much (c£30-40 per year) so a non issue as far as I'm concerned.

Mixed bag on this one. My house insurance includes the optional cover but my local club insists on BC membership. As I am no longer a member of my local club I no longer need BC membership.

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

So it seems it’s clear as mud. British cycling and Cycling UK membership is nearer 50 quid these days. As for needing it to race that ship sailed along time ago.

you need to read the policy very carefully, location of coverage, and especially the exclusions which can be all over the place, or not even documented - seriously - i ended up in a long dispute because an insurer tried rejecting a valid claim based on an exclusion not stated in the policy document but that they had created in their internal rules, legally they hadn't a leg to stand on, but it's a time waste/hassle having to go through the process to enforce compliance

an insurer might take the position that participation in a club ride is excluded because it's an 'organised sporting event', if you want to rely on your home insurance liability cover, it'd be best to ask your insurer to confirm it would apply on club rides/events

if you get sued, will liability insurance cover you for legal costs of defending yourself? or only for any damages awarded against you? no idea - but i have legal insurance for that, plus home insurance, travel insurance and whatever british cycling gives

my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

Thanks SG that’s the sort of info I was after. I guess it’s picking either BC or UKC depending who has the best discounts with various shops.
