Col du Sabot, Oisans

At the end of October it was still pleasant for road cycling so I decided to climb a col I'd only ever done before on skis, the Col du Sabot. I took the camera along with me.

Starting at Rochetaille down towards Bourg d'Oisans it is around 1350 meters of vertical. The Sabot is only col in the Isere department over 2000 meters altitude. Solitude guaranteed at the summit. At least on a late autumn afternoon. The road surface was nothing like as bad as I'd been led to believe but it is narrow with no safety on the descent to Vaujany.

  • Awesome video - great camera work, thanks so much for sharing. What a beautiful day for a ride.

Happy memories for me having stayed in Vaujany on several holidays. Really want to get back there in 2025 as haven’t been there since before Covid. Your brilliant video has made me even more determined.

Love the Col du Sabot. The walking from there is awesome too. A big memory is large Griffon vultures flying over us on a walk the other side of the Col. I remember an evening ride up there and the biggest hazard wasn’t the road surface, but the cattle on the road. Got caught in a rainstorm on one descent where the Pirelli tyres I had fitted to my Focus Cayo really impressed too!

Best wishes and keep posting those videos please!

Thanks MM, I reckon wider tires : 28mm + would be a good idea at the expense of a bit more climbing weight.
