No Glasgow 2026 commie games road race
Absolutely scunnered. What a wasted opportunity.
For months before and after last years Worlds we were told that Glasgow and Edinburgh were supposed to have the Tour de France Grand Depart in 2026... The biggest annual sporting event on Earth.
Rumour had it that stage 1 would go into the Trossachs, over Dukes Pass, past Stirling Castle, the Forth bridges and finish with cobbled climb up to and inside Edinburgh Castle. It would have been spectacular.
Money, resources and public facilities had been set aside for it. Then some chump from Melbourne throws his toys out the pram, the late empire loving fantasists start pulling forelocks, and instead we get the school sports day. . . And it has just neen announced with no road cycling.
Enjoy your bowls.
Grrrrrrr

Haven't seen dates for the Games. Clash with July TdF?

No confirmed dates, but generally in July so quite probably.

They're cutting events to save money cos it's a massive waste of time and nobody cares. The road race is an obvious event to cut due to the scale of it.

Yeahbut that is the CG. Cutting the TdF because of them is most annoying.

Was there any real substance to the 2026 TdF rumours?

They had an event in Glasgow in 2014, and we were promised it was a once in a generation thing.

The RR is free to watch so does bring much income to the Games organisers, velodrome tickets do.

Yes.
UK sport were driving it.
Radio Cycling podcast did a few episodes on it.
I also know people who were quietly working on it.

Another TdF Grand Depart? Really?? Go for the top level while the lower level in the UK is struggling.......not a good look. They're as bad as Motorsport UK....
What about the Giro, or as William Fotheringham suggested on Twitter the other day, the CX Worlds; we haven't had them since 1992, in Roundhay Park, Bradford. And since 2016 have had plenty of success at CX Worlds; Richards, Pidcock, Tulett and Backstedt have all won multiple titles.

That would be a good and not disruptive one to go for. But they'd end up putting it in Hyde Park.
