La Vuelta 2024:- Stage 10: Ponteareas – Baiona, 159.6km ***Spoilers***
Ponteareas – Baiona, 159.6km
Tuesday 27th August
Start Time 12-30BST.
After a well-deserved break, the racing resumes in Galicia. Stage 10 traces the rollercoaster-like terrain along the Spanish-Portugese border. The 159.6 kilometres long race travels through the rolling hills of white wines Vallhalla Rías Baixas. Although the mountain passes have low altitudes, they lack flat surfaces, as the riders tackle nearly 3,000 metres of climbing. There will be a Category 1 climb at the start of the stage and the final part will cover three mountain passes that already played prominent roles in the famous Mos stage in La Vuelta 21. It will be the third time that a Vuelta stage sets off from Ponteareas.

What to Expect.
The finale is not hard enough for GC contenders to gain time, so the most likely scenario is that the breakaway rides for victory. An exciting opening phase is on the cards, probably with the Alto de Fonfría as a perfect launchpad for attacks.
Ponteareas
Ponteareas has already hosted 3 La Vuelta stage departures.
23,049 inhabitants.
Ponteareas is a town and municipality in the province of Pontevedra, in the autonomous community of Galicia, Spain. It belongs to the comarca of O Condado. It is located on the Vigo-Benavente highway and on the river Tea, a right-hand tributary of the Miño. Ponteareas is the proud birthplace of two of La Vuelta’s greatest cyclists. The first is Delio Rodríguez, the rider who won the race in 1945 and holds the record for most partial victories with 39 stage victories to his name – an achievement that, in turn, allowed him to win the points classifications both in 1945 and 1947. The second is Álvaro Pino, who has a sports centre named after him in that locality. He obtained the final victory in La Vuelta 1986 and won 5 stages between 1981 and 1989, as well as a King of the Mountain classification.
Lacón con grelos
Lacón con grelos is one of the most famous Galician meat dishes, made with turnip greens and ham hock as the main ingredients. They are boiled together, and the dish is then traditionally served with potatoes and sausages. This hearty meat dish is usually prepared and consumed during winter.
Baiona
Baiona has already hosted 2 La Vuelta finish-lines.
12,349 inhabitants.
Baiona, a seaside jewel found along the Pontevedra coastline stands out for its historical heritage and its views over the Atlantic. Monterreal Castle, a legacy from another era, watches majestically over Monte Boi. Standing on a pedestal facing the sea, the Virgin of the Rock protects sailors and often serves as a lighthouse. With its fusion of both coastal and contemporary splendour, Baiona invites its visitors to explore its beaches, as well as its many flavours and traditions, which never fail to captivate them.
Vieiras en su concha
Vieiras en su concha is a traditional Spanish dish originating from Galicia, consisting of scallops served in their shells. The dish is usually made with a combination of scallops, olive oil, onions, garlic, pimentón, white wine, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, breadcrumbs, and parsley.

First day I've been able to catch up with the racing. Have I missed much?

Not really, it's been absolutely baking and everyone is cooked.
This lot have been slow roasted and should be extra tender by now

Average 37kmh up the first hill and no real break established. WVA and Soler just off the front. Plenty dropped off the back before they get to 20km downhill and 50km of flat.

Pretty furious start

Another group trying to go off the front of the peloton - once that one joins with the WVA group I think that will be it.

Van Aert attacks early at the intermediate sprint and takes the points, doesn't look like he's waiting around afterwards. Pacher has got onto his wheel.
Soler's sticky bottles getting ridiculous

You forget that Soler needs to be told what to do every second of the race.
Why he isn't hammering it now is beyond me and no doubt his team.

Actually it's because he's done.

Pacher attack but couldn't get away. Don't think he's getting his first pro win today.

Pacher doesn't even bother to make WVA sprint for it.

Wout starts his sprint and Pacher sits up after about two pedal strokes.
He's happy with it anyway, knew he had no chance

Good to see WvA back in form
