A brutally honest blog from Leo Hayter, where he reveals he's suffering from depression and anxiety.

Hope he can overcome this with time

That's a painful read. Hopefully he can get himself out of the spiral and putting it in writing is a useful step. We seem to see quite a few sportspeople go down that road and it is probably something we all need to think about a bit when we criticise performance, we just never know what's happening below the surface and how the criticism may affect someone who is already so full of self-doubt. It's really tricky as he seems to want to keep being a pro cyclist but at the same time being a pro cyclist is adding to the anxiety he feels.

I was expecting this, sadly. It's an incredibly brave step to make to be as open and honest about struggles with depression and anxiety as Leo is in that blog post, especially for a professional athlete.

I hope he can find a way forward that is beneficial for his mental health.

I read this whilst on holiday, one hell of an emotional and difficult read, though hats off to him for being quite so honest and detailed in his description, suspect it may help a lot of people.

He's clearly very talented, hopefully he can come back in the future at some point, with the right team.
