Brake pad broke off backing

Anyone experienced this, I replaced my pads on GRX 400 brakes with what really appeared to be genuine Shimano L05a rf units. From fitting the front brake squealed, something I abhor and have always sorted in the past (60 years riding and fixing bikes). This morning took a ride in Nidderdale across the moor. On a minor descent, without braking, something 'clicked' on the front wheel, I was suspicious of the noise and when I decided to retrace my last few yards the brake needed extra pumping before it gripped, with a loud squeal! Beyond the squeal, which I had got used to with these pads there was nothing obvious, however when I started to descend (a 20% mile long hill) the squeal become very loud and grated causing a shudder. Now it was obvious something was wrong but I managed to stop the bike as I approached a serious downward section. When I looked at the disk rotor it was a mess of metal shavings and if I applied the brakes it made a dreadful grating sound. I walked the couple of miles home and examined the wheel. It was immediately clear the brake pad had come off the backing plate (the click I had heard), and the grating was the metal backing on the brake disk grinding away, aluminium on stainless so no real damage to the rotor.

  • Not heard of or seen it ,the L05a pads were and are a great step up from the 3as they replaced ,especially in how long they last .

Possibly not real as there are lots of fake ones out there now

Bought off an ebay seller (never again for a safety critical component) so possibly counterfeit - but very good replica if so. The fact I had squealing from the start and could not fix it is suspicious in retrospect - bad bonding perhaps. I have bought some from Tredz just to be sure.

Had the same thing happen to me two days ago - fake pads I think. Very dangerous! Have reported them to eBay!

Can’t post photo for some reason - but lining came away from finned back plate completely on a descent.

That's bad news, I hope you came away unhurt, I only just managed to stop before a very steep gradient section. I couldn't post photo either, all it showed was the scraped metal backing minus its pad. I have since purchased some the same from Tredz, my go to shop. There are subtle differences between the real and ebay ones, the pad material is different and with the ebay one, one fin is a simple pin shape but is tapered on the ebay one. I have reported too. Obviously a bonding fault, but such a dangerous one. I feel stupid now for buying from ebay, and it was no cheaper!
