Vintage 1930's Deschamps bike.
A friend of mine purchased a rare (serial number: 17) Deschamps vintage bike and wants to know find out as much as possible about the frame before restoration. The bike has a 3 speed simplex single cable rear mech and was originally (we think) completely chromed.
Can anyone add anything?

They're on their way. We don't think the simplex gear was fitted at the factory. Then i'll trawl the Disraeli gears website.

Yes, I'm sure it's not original to the bike. In the 40s they were using Campagnolo Cambio Corsa so that must be some time later. I'll ask the old bike lot when I see them tomorrow.

So one of the guys had a 1940s Peugeot that had a similar set up, but 4 speed. He was saying french touring bikes had reliable derailleur systems in the 30s so it could well have been original. The derailleur attached to the bracket forward of the vertical dropout. Says the gearchange was clunky, but it worked. Shifter on his was attached to the top tube just behind the headtube lug.

More info; The frame is a Rene Herse.

Apparently the badge in the first picture is because the bike was registered to the owner, so that should be the address of the first owner.

Yes, I found that out. Nazi law or standard practice?
The badge reads:
Deschamps, Rue Fairand, Nort Sur Erde, 44. Small town north of Nantes.
