Newbie to Tubeless Question

Hello All. I did have a scout around and couldn't quite find an existing answer. I'm new to tubeless, with a Bontrager tubeless wheelset setup by the local bikeshop in early June. I've pumped the tyres up a few times with a Bontrager Dual Charger track-pump with only a few psi needed at a time.

However this evening I attached the pump and immediately the handle of the pump went straight up. It was tricky to push down and I couldn't get a good reading. I then tried a Bontrager TLR Flash Charger and it did seem to do better, even using it as a regular pump as it gave a good psi reading. This was the case with both wheels.

What would cause the handle to go straight-up, when it hasn't done that previously?

Thank you,

It could be the head on your pump or the valve sticking on the wheel itself. They are both designed as one way valves in normal operation, the wheel valve only becomes a 2 way valve if you press it down.

Thanks for the reply and it did make me think.

I tried a spare head on the pump, but with the same result. What I didn’t do yesterday was to retry the pump with the tubed wheels. So on doing that, the handle went straight up, which means the pump is at fault.

I popped to the lbs this morning but the pump could’ve be repaired. Shame, but it’s 7 years old and it’s done well. So a shiny new pump is now inflating both sets of wheels normally.

,So nothing to do with the tubeless wheels, which I’m glad of. Now I just need to learn what’s needed to top the sealant up and how to use the plugs.

    Thanks again.

Try the following. I used this and youtube to start with. As to sorting plugs or darts it's quite brutal and goes against what you'd think.

I wasn’t aware of that side, thank you.
