I don’t think we can take anything coming out of the Visma camp as definitive, both in terms of the extent of his injury and his rate of recovery.
A case in point yesterday regarding WVA’s crash. The party line was he was too banged up to anything other than spend the next couple of days recuperating. Van Aert himself claimed he wouldn’t be able to contest the sprint.
Yet where did we find him at the finish of yesterday’s stage?

Their medical team are real miracle workers.

Except we do know Vinegarman was in intensive care, had numerous broken ribs and a ounctured lung, and was in hospital for nearly a month (IIRC).
It's a miraculous recovery to then be duking it out with Pog in a sprint having closed down a 25 second gap on a climb......

It was 12 days in hospital, which is long enough

I heard on the Internet he's still in hospital.

I was thinking of being off the bike or out of competition for 3 or 4 months the first part of which they might be treated with steroids which I’m led to believe have a long lasting effective long effect in performance after they’ve been stopped.

^Different steroids are very different and affect performance very differently.
He will almost certainly have had anti-inflammatory steroids as part of emergency treatment and likely recovery. These aren't really performance enhancing* and would be allowed, subject to TUE. (*Do influence fat burn, but the overall benefits are at best marginal).
Serious injury may be treated with anabolic steroids to speed recovery and tissue repair. These can have very long lasting effects, would be surprised if he had these unless unavoidable. I don't think he would get a pass for these.

Would these things have to be declared unless the professional cyclist blood profile was suspect. Or as a professional cyclist are your medical records not confidential.

Would be picked up on OOC testing, so would need TUE.
Medical records are confidential, until Fancy Bears leak them.
