2024 UK politics - now with Labour in charge

FA, re-read my post and tell what part of that makes you think that. I was pretty clear that they haven't done it yet.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Why is that hypothetical situation a bad thing?
If they are leaving anyway the government gets some cash, if it puts them off leaving then we keep the precious millionaires.

no, everyone can read what was posted, it's clear that you are attempting to distract

Isn't "Australian style" normally code for "good/not scary" in Tory circles?

Point is, if they weren't concerned about an exodus of the wealthy they would need something like that.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Wrong again. Want to try answering the question?
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
It's not their policy.

Not sure what you mean. My post above was pretty clear that it was something that was being considered.
The underlying issue is the number of wealthy tax payers leaving the UK - what are your thoughts on that?
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
The Telegraph is reporting (i havent read the report and i suspect that you havent either) that a think tank proposed an exit tax. Any suggestion that Labour are considering it is just conjecture as far as I can see.
My thoughts on the new tax that hasn't happened due to tax hikes that haven't happened?
Too early to tell I'd say.

I know there's a lot of handwringing, but so far we've got the Pimlico guy who's sold his business and his property, leaving both assets in the UK. The extent to which that will actually diminish receipts is unknown. Oh, and the couple anonymous billionaires. All based on no actual changes in tax policy: just vibes. Now we have a rumour that someone urged the Chancellor to do something. Quite a long way from them actually considering it, let alone implementing it.
Kind of ironic that this fluff is reported in a paper owned by a couple of tax exiles, yet the business is still based in London.

Or at least realise that something being reported in The Telegraph doesn’t make it true. For all we know that newspaper may hold biases and not be entirely happy with having a Labour government. Who knows?

If you have any source that suggest the report is incorrect, please post it. Otherwise you're into the Davebradswheteverhisnameis logic of not believing it because you don't want to.
And going back to then underlying point - do you really think that departures of the wealthy and non-doms is not happening?
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
The non doms policy is already known.
They know enough about what is likely to happen to taxes such as CGT, IHT, wealth tax to make getting out a decent bet.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Changes to non dom status were announced by the Tories in March.
If all these money makers are making plans based on a hunch, Labour needn't worry about how actual policy would affect them anyway.

Strange then that many of them cite Labour as the reason. Charlie Mullins was one recent example.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
And more leftie backsliding, this time on cars - but in a good way.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

Not even the Guardian dreamt up the headline "Tories elect leader who could tank the economy and add £1000s to your mortgage payments". Sadly, that wasn't fiction.
Labour could do all sorts of things, including taxing skinny lattes at 500%, and the Telegraph would not hesitate in reporting it as a done deal.

I notice that nobody is trying to rebut my original point 🙂
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Because you are effectively asking them to prove a negative. How can anyone prove what Labour are not going to do at some point in the future? I could write a piece for the Telegraph that Labour are going to abolish the State pension, if I asked you to prove they aren’t would you be able to?

Stevo is a visitor from the future, to warn us what happens after 14 years of the same government.

Was happening way before then apparently.

Wealthy people think about changing location? Wow! That would never have occurred to me.
Switch sarcasm mode off, and continue.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
You don't need to, I've already shown evidence of the wealthy departing or planning to. I suppose if the UK under Labour was a business friendly place and attractive to wealth creators, that you could show some positive news about them flocking here, or at least planning to. Although somehow I think you might struggle to find such evidence.

No need for time travel, its happening now even if you don't want it to be the case.

I’m not sure you should base an argument on what someone says who was so opposed to. Remit they said they’d fund the Lib Dems and yet is now a member of Reform (he also said someone should kill Sadiq Khan). The guy is a bit of a loon.

These articles are just scaremongering, apart from Mr Pimlico Plumbers no-one has actually left as a result of Labour policy, whereas the article I referenced was based on actual data.
