Hoping to get in the next break that might make it.

The three of them was never winning.

EF must have looked at Movistar tactics and thought, "let's give that a go!"

    And now folded back in.

Powless is good enough to win a Tour stage like this. Better to be in with a chance than to be sat back in the peloton thinking what if.

If your plan has failed, it's better to bring them back than leave them out there doomed to spend the day 3 minutes in front with no hope of winning.

He's good enough from a decent break. Not from that one.

Surprised they didn't have them hanging out to latch onto another break for a bit longer.

EF wanted to get a heavy hitter into a big break, but nobody else really wanted to play (or were allowed to). MvdP was policing effectively, nobody in their right mind would drag him to the line. But Ineos and Visma also saw an opportunity to make the race hard for a moment

Mads got pulled by his team, was called into a meeting with his DS and doctor last night who told him they'd never seen anything as nasty as him suffering on his TT bike and they "recommended" he pull out. He said he'd probably have tried to continue if it wasn't for the olympics. Double-hard bastard but needs protecting from himself

Intermediate sprint coming up. Might kick off a new round of attacks if we're lucky.

    Well played Intermarché

Lead out Girmay and Thijssen then outsprinted Philipsen for second

No afters from the sprint and they didn't knock much off Abrahamsen's lead

Trine Schmidt - TV2 DK's replacement for Rolf Sørensen on this Tour just answered a question about how women racers pee during races. Apparently one time she went behind a cactus and stripped off (jersey off to be able to get the bib sorts down, careful with the radio wires etc) and nobody saw - except Eddie Merckx, who waved at her 😂

    Ah, puncture.

He's missed a trick in his bib number. He's got 37, like it's 2023 all over again. As one of the elder statesmen of the Tour he should be in 38 to match his age.

Yes, coming down now. Was holding steady at about 6 minutes while it was strung out with only one rider working, but now they are rolling through on the front of the peloton.

Apparently Trek are convinced Mads was riding with a fracture in his shoulder blade that isn't very visible on the xray

They still think he'll be OK for the Olympics, just needs a week's rest

Cycling must be one of the most dangerous sports these days ...
