Alpecin really don't want Mads up there for the intermediate, they've got 6km to close him down

This looks hard, the sprinters must be hating it. MVDP is now riding off to bridge.

MvdP trying to bridge solo, it's only a handful of seconds

Sestriere's ~40km at 3.7% average is mental compared to UK climbs, when Road To Hell is one of the biggest at ~11Km ~3.2%.

Not good having a mechanical at that point.

I can't be the only one that has done club runs that feel like this with long, draggy climbs and someone on the front pushing the pace leaving you desperately trying to hang on as you know you're done if you lose the wheel.

Gaviria hanging off the back and looks like a bus might be starting to form already including the latest Great French Hope. All back together at the front.

Gaviria out the back already. Alpecin riders paying the price too.

Philipsen didn’t have the legs. Pedersen’s points.

    Jesus Mads is strong.

Takes the sprint from the front, Philipsen sits down almost immediately, Girmay 2nd

Ironically it is some sprinters and their teams driving it up teh climb and some climbers struggling to hang on.

Mads takes the sprint from Girmay.

Yeah but Road To Hell has a long section at 15% so hardly comparable!

There’s two grupettos. One with the sprinters, the other with half the peloton!

That steep section on RTH is only ~2km and it's a fun climb with lots of gradient variations, but it's dwarfed by Sestriere, just over quarter of the length averaging over 3%.

Could Cav miss the time limit or is the stage too short?

Van Aert not in his usual spot on a mountain stage. Bernal and Roglic trying to bridge by the sound of it.
