A bit of a surprise finish, that. Grimay was allegedly not the designated team sprinter for today.
Disappointing that we don’t get any count back drama.

Carapaz into yellow, EF were leading him out instead of their sprinter Van Den Berg. He got 14th

Robbie Hunter and Daryl Impey have both won stages.

Did VDP crash? I thought it was just a mechanical but he's rubbing his shoulder, maybe just easing out the effects of a long day in the saddle.

Until Girmay came along I was convinced the first black African to win a Tour stage would be a climber. I had high hopes for Daniel Teklehaimanot

Yeah, it felt like one of those interviews where back in the day he'd be shouting and swearing but he's got better at controlling himself.

Cavendish did seem really pleased for Girmay though - genuine pleasure and knowledge of what it represented.

FWIW I wonder if (from comments elsewhere) there are two interviews with Cavendish going round? Seem to be a lot of views incompatible with the one I saw.

What one did you see? The one with Hannah Walker he wasn’t exactly grumpy but in an odd mood like he wasn’t sure how it had gone for him. He was happily signing autographs but got a bit arsey with someone pushing a jersey towards him as he was about to sign it. It felt a bit like he wanted to explode but had been told to keep up the charm offensive.
Orla was suggesting he doesn’t like people making statements as questions and waits for them to turn it into a proper question.

Guessing you saw the ITV one as I did.
Presumably there was a more moody one with Eurosport.

Anyone else think the reaction to Girmay is a bit condescending?
Guy’s been a major rider for a while with a decent palmares and some notable wins.
He’s hardly come out of the blue.

Not really. He's hugely well liked and it really is a huge deal to be the first black African stage winner.
Remember - he's not even his team's out and out sprinter, they've got some weird shared duty. He might be talked up for a hard finish sprint stage (uphill drag), along with Mads P, but for yesterday's stage it should really have been the big boys

There's also that after his last big win he opened a bottle of fizz into his eye - and that was after winning one of the great stages, and then had multiple crashes taking him out of the Giro this year when he was looking on really good form. He's had a bit of bad luck in amongst the decent results.
