Tour de France 2024 pre race discussion
With some teams being announced, and just over a week away, I thought I'd create a thread for any pre-Tour discussion
It's been prompted by finding that the Road book is now on an app on App Store and Google Play store
The username you need is "guest" and the password is "roadbook2024" (case sensitive)

Wierd, I cannot get logged in to download the roadbook despite resetting my password in the other tdf app. I've asked my daughter to try as its probably an old person thing.

I have had a quick study of the route, as I started to knock up the stages. TBH, I am not sure what the fuss is about. Sure, it has a tough final weekend, but by my reckoning, there are nine sprint stages and only four "proper" mountain stages. I am not sure some gravel and a few medium mountain visits mark this edition as being extra tough. Aside the lack of a traditional Paris finish, it looks a pretty bog standard edition.

I definitely agree with this. Stage 20 looks tough on paper, but there is no monster in there i don’t think. Some of those of climbs were used on stage 2 in 2020 and that wasnt especially selective. Depends on how it’s raced. It might be a very tight race. Not outside the bounds of possibility that you’ll have 3 or 4 riders with a chance on the final day.
That final day TT looks like a 45 minute effort. Quite sizeable. You can see after 3 weeks some possibly key gaps between people of 1 min. Maybe more. It’ll probably neutralise stage 20.

Would love to know the ninth sprint stage.

That's TP doubled up in Crans Montana with the Olympic distance race. A solid 3 week training block in France should leave him in great condition for his main season's objective.

Would love to know how you define a sprint stage.
There aren’t 9 for Jakobsen, Groenewegen and Cav, but most of the sprinters at the Tour are classics riders.
Besides, it all depends upon how they race

For a modern day ITT in a grand tour. I should have added.

8 pure sprints max ....
The final tt has the potential to cause a bit of gc movement

There's some odd stages . How hard is the gravel ....sector 8 attack

The key word there is pure.
I am not clear as to how tough stage 8 is, or why the likes of WVA, MvDP, Mads Pedersen, Bling, Coquard etc would necessarily get dropped on these parcour.

Stage 8 is a sprint stage on paper.
I've got the following stages classified as sprint stages; Stage 3, Stage 5, Stage 6, Stage 8, Stage 10, Stage 12, Stage 13 and Stage 16.
Stage 18 could be, but that late in the race I think it'll be a breakaway day.

Decathlon AG2R: Gall, Bennet, Armirail, Lapeira, Godon, Peters, Naesen, Prodhomme
(Is Cosnefroy injured or something? Thought he'd be guaranteed for AG2R?)

He's focused on one day races and shorter stage races these days, as he found doing GTs doesn't suit him.

I have stage 9 down as a possible sprint between the suspects mentioned above. Could also suit Philipsen and De Lie.
Of course this is a grand tour stage rather than a classic, so we have to assume the likes of WVA will be on babysitting duty, so it’s much more of an unknown quantity.

Any good ...I like it down there
