Hi, Looking to get a new MTB for my lad.

We have been to 3 local shops & 2 have said he is a 'Large' Hes about 5'9 at 13 (The other shop didn't have any in our price range)

Looking to Spend approx £500

So far we have looked at a Cube Aim Pro & Trek Marlin 4/5 (dependent on discount)

Are these good bike to look at or is there anything else that should be on the radar?

We would like to go to Cannock (nothing too mental)

We have got Marlin 6's we use for off road but not really rough stuff, pretty pleased with them. The frames are the same through the Marlin range so you can upgrade fairly easily.

I am 5'8" and the M/L is a good fit.

I'd suggest m/l. At 13 I'm guessing he's not massively built so might find a large framed bike hard work. I'm 5' 8" and had a cube aim in large off my brother and sold it very quickly as way to big. What I would recommend is the Carrera Fury from hafrauds. Good fork and decent build.
