Frame splits at FD mounting point
My friend was cycling a couple of days ago and came to an abrupt halt when his FD moved on its mount, chain snapped.
It's a Giant Defy Carbon, 5 years old?
We presume frame is written off!
Anyone else seen this happen?

It might not be a right off yet. Worth giving a carbon repair specialist a try first.
Can't fault these guys.
you've worried me tbh as I have similar aged defy, so I've just double checked it. Luckily looks good.
Too many bikes according to Mrs O.0 -
Will pass that on to him.

Change it to a 1X
You can get some great options with sram ,done it to a road bike with the same problem

The tube looks like it is damaged enough to be significantly weakened, it will need to be sorted even if it is changed to 1X.

He's going to take it to a carbon repair place the lbs uses, see what they say!

Is your friend the original purchaser and did he warranty register the bike within the 90 day period? If so the frame is warrantied for life.

That's a good point , I'll let him know.

It looks like the chain somehow caught the derailleur and tore out the bolts so almost certainly not covered by the warranty

As a matter of interest can I ask is the bike disc or rim braked? You mention that it is (5 years old?), however the rear wheel looks like a rim brake type which would make the bike a 2014 model at the latest. The Defy went disc brake only from 2015 on.

He is getting it fixed at a carbon repair place in Alloa? £80. He thinks it was caused by a mechanical pulling on the fd and putting too much force on the mounting, so would have been unlikely to be a warranty claim.
