Barrel Adjuster Frame Mount

The barrel adjuster on my down tube is completely seized.

I have enough adjustment with the other adjusters but I'd still like to sort this one. I think the only solution is to replace the adjuster and the black mount. Any idea where I can find one of the black mounts? The bike is a Merida Road Ride 77. About 13 years old now and had quite a bit of work but I presume those mounts are the original ones.

Of course if anyone has suggestions for getting the adjuster moving without replacing the mount, let me know.

If you're looking for the part riveted to the frame, that's probably going to be a challenge, they won't have been sold aftermarket. To try to get it moving, first remove the cable to get it out of the way and remove any tension, then soak it with some penetrating fluid and leave it overnight. Grab it with some pliers and just try to get it moving either way.

Assuming the thread isn't completely dead afterwards, new barrel adjusters as linked above are probably a good idea. Cleaning out the threads by running a thread tap through first with plenty of oil would be ideal, but doing the same thing with a bolt would help if you don't have access to a tap.

If the thread is dead, there's still options. As it's on the right side, I assume it's the rear mech, they have a barrel adjuster built in, so you could run a full outer cable to bypass this and just use the barrel adjuster on the mech for adjustment.

if you simply want to restore reachable adjustment, you could fit an inline adjuster...

    https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/search/?term=inline%20adjuster

    otherwise...

likely due to galvanic corrosion, the aluminium gets corroded, volume increases and it's rough, it jams tight

lubricants may not help and can make it harder to remove as they'll block introducing other liquids

white vinegar might help dissolve the corrosion a bit (don't let it get into the rivets/frame), after that i'd try a bit of acf-50 on the off chance

pliers on the stop, others on the adjuster, so that you can apply force without stressing the rivets/downtube, and wiggle it

heat it up the stop, then squirt freezer into the adjuster and turn, differential expansion might loosen it a smidge

    more violent...

use a dremel/similar to cut a narrow slot along the stop so that you can lever it open just a tiny bit to loosen the adjuster, it might be possible to clean it out then squish it back leaving it still usable

drill out the adjuster to weaken it enough to remove, but the stop thread may not survive

sjs have a wide range of bits, may have some replacements for the stop, including clamp-on ones (if the downtube is round), best to call them as they may have something kicking around
