Hi, New here to this forum. Does anybody have any advice? The rear brakes have missing spring adjusting screws. They do not return after braking. Are these screws available or is there an economical replacement brake available?

What sort of brakes are they? Pictures of the brakes and what's missing might help if you're not sure.0

Had to put a zip tie on to get me home.0

Maybe take another pic more from just in front of the seat stay looking back towards the cantilever mechanism. I'm also puzzled by the black cable tie that seems to go round the brake cable after it has gone through the boss on the brake pivot arm What is that doing , if anything. Can't imagine it will be helping the free movement of the pivot.0

So is it this screw you are looking for:
If so, this is a similar screw for a different brake

But I'd say most would be an M3 thread. Your best bet might be to go into a friendly bike shop and ask the workshop if they have anything in their spares box you could use and ply them with biscuits if they won't take cash.

I had this happen on a set of Shimano XT V brakes and could not source any replacement return springs so ended up replacing both units.
If it is the return spring/s (one on each arm) that is broken, you may be able to source replacements from SJS Cycles if they are Shimano, however you may be better replacing with a new unit. https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brakes-v-brake/

Thanks. I am not sure if that is it. My picture was not too helpful, sorry.
This pic is better . I put an arrow on the spot.
I did try a local bike shop but got a sharp intake of whistle-in-air and a shake of head. LOL. I tried a m2 which was too big. This is a better pic.
Is this a rare type of brake?

It looks like just a standard cantilever brake. They're rarer than they used to be, but you can still pick up a replacement from the likes of Shimano or Tektro for £20-30, like this one: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brakes/tektro-oryx-992a-cyclocross-brake-black/
What I would make sure of when looking for a replacement is that the brake arm has a slot for the brake pad post to go through - Your current one has this (the slot you've run the zip tie through). There is a type where the pad has a smooth post which goes through a fitting on the brake, these are comparatively a nightmare to set up correctly and should be avoided. This is an example of one to avoid because of this: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brakes/front-shimano-altus-ct91-cantilever-brakes-silver/0 -
Thanks. I will look into this.
Many thanks to all on the forum.0 -
According to various reviews on the Dawes Vantage, it would appear that the bike should be fitted with Tektro Oryx cantilever brakes. From the pics above it looks like they may be an older design because they differ a bit from the ones shown in the link provided by @whyamihere above. However you can still see the tension adjusting grub screw in the pics on the SJS advert.
You could order a selection of diameters (M2, M2.5, M3) and lengths (5mm, 10mm??) from this Ebay seller for a few squids. Might provide a solution at not much cost.

Many thanks to all. The link to SJS cycles has opened up new dawes LOL. (sorry).
I did get some grub screws and a set of brakes. 4mm grub screws seemed to fit. The threaded hole is very soft metal so I might have tapped it out slightly.
The other brake was too damaged so I replaced it.
Thanks for the info, and tip about the slot.
The grub screws don't seem to adjust much. Maybe they are just to stop the spring from pinging out?
I also found there is a locating pin on the brake that fits into one of two locating holes on the frame.
This provides a convenient coarse adjustment.
So I am back on the road! Thanks everyone.2
